Design Incubation

Design Incubation Design Incubation is a resource for communication design research, education, and practice.

Design Incubation, founded in 2014, is a venue for educators and practitioners of Communication Design to discuss their design research and practice. Our aim is to create a community in which designers can assess creative work through a lens of scholarly activity and academic review. We began with a public colloquia series, a list of attendees, and an archive of abstracts of presentations. In 2015, the Fellowship Program at Design Incubation was introduced to facilitate and develop academic writing and investigate publishing opportunities. In 2016, the Communication Design Educators Awards were established. Three (3) awards— for excellence in Scholarly, Teaching and Service in the field were established. We seek to foster collaboration, promote development, encourage discourse, cultivate theoretical frameworks, challenge notions, offer criticism, and review processes within the design community. We include designers across experience levels and backgrounds— practicing designers, graduate students, adjunct and tenure-track faculty through to distinguished professors.

Mission: The mission of Design Incubation is to support and facilitate the development of research in the field of communication design. The organization works with academics and practitioners to create scholarly discourse and publications focused on creative projects, critical analysis, historical perspectives, technological advances and other topics relevant to design studies.

Access as Design Requirement: Improving Attitudes and Commitment

As a discipline, we often focus and reward visual design and aesthetics over, rather than in addition to, usability and accessibility. If we want emerging digital designers to design for the public good, then access needs to be core to their process and their education. Creating a learning environment that makes access a priority both in the way the course is delivered and in the learning objectives impacts who student designers consider as audiences and how they prioritize the needs and desires of those audience members. Design, Food and Human Connection

Nicholas Rock Assistant ProfessorBoston University Design is present in visible and invisible ways in contemporary society such that the term "design" has permeated everyday language—resulting in a situation where everyone knows what design is and no one knows what design is. Design is becoming further integrated with business, and socio-economic demands require a constant pursuit of data and technological advances while leaving behind the personal and social side of those same topics.
