Movers and shakers making connections and starting critical conversations about dance, art, culture, politics, and business.

Candice Thompson, Stephanie Wolf, and Nicole Cerutti founded DIYdancer (Dd) in September 2010. The three worked together at LOLAstretch Dancewear, a company Thompson started and ran for five years. Building out annual calendars and directing photo shoots for the dancewear line, Thompson, Wolf, and Cerutti discovered they worked well together. They also found a commonality in their diverse artistic interests and desire to push conversations about dance into a more critical light. Dd began as a digital platform for thoughtful dance criticism and journalism. An initial goal was to broaden the context of dance in order to understand its cross-relevance to the rest of the world. It was less about advocacy, and more about challenging the status quo of how we talk and write about dance.

Mission: {DIYdancer} brings together dancers, artists, collaborators, and friends to empower the arts community from the inside out. Through an online forum and critical response, the site aims to build awareness, facilitate conversation, and inspire curiosity. {Dd} strives to broaden the context of dance in order to understand its cross-relevance to the outside world—pushing the boundaries and blurring the lines.

“While all of the pieces in @fullradiusdance’s 25th MAD Festival were captivating and had unique themes, Corian Ellisor’s ‘My People,’ performed by Ellisor and Alejandro Abarca, was the work that gave me goosebumps and made me think deeply about the different ways movement can be used to encourage political change.

Opening the work, Abarca moved fluidly across the stage without ever letting his limbs lift from the ground, fully embodying the smooth voice of Mahalia Jackson singing the classic “Summertime.” When Ellisor took over the solo work, growing from his casual lying position on the ground, he shifted versions of Abarca’s movements to the vertical space. He maintained the slow, almost casual, energy of the opening, before joining Abarca for a more intricate duet with jumps, rolls, and lots of sustained inversions. Dancing side by side in blue and red jumpsuits, the duo had a maturity that comes from a longtime dance partnership like Ellisor and Abarca’s. They are longtime friends and collaborators, and both came to Atlanta after meeting at the University of Houston. Although their movement qualities are quite different, with Abarca shining in effortless floorwork and Ellisor captivating with expansive gestures, their textures blend together powerfully. After the tranquil voice of Jackson slowed and stopped, a recording of a newscaster jolted the space with a new sense of urgency. The recording spoke of teenage boys being detained at the Mexican border and described families who were separated after trying to enter the United States. Ellisor and Abarca’s heavy breathing added to the soundscore, enhancing the struggle and anguish displayed with the choreography. The recording brought in a harsh reality and dissolved the fantasy world of smooth jazz, but Ellisor and Abarca continued to move together, supporting one another. The piece concluded with Abarca and Ellisor embracing each other, which seemed both a hopeful gesture and a desperate attempt to hold onto loved ones.” @sydneyburrows1 #criticaldraft #changedemandsmovement

Night of 100 Drawings – { DIYdancer } Magazine

We celebrated the Merce Cunningham Centennial year and covered one of 2019's marquee events: 'Night of 100 Solos' with a conversation from LA, NYC, and London with new contributor Oluwaseun Samuel Olayiwola in London, longtime contributor Annie Coggan in Brooklyn, and our creative director Lara Wilson in Los Angeles.

Plus Annie Coggan was so inspired she made 100 one-of-a-kind watercolor drawings in response! There are about 90 left in this online gallery for sale and each one ships FREE in a simple white frame for $100 thru this Sunday evening. 30% of the proceeds from each artwork sold will be donated back to the Merce Trust the organization responsible for this collaborative and historic evening.

“When I first thought of making a dance about boundaries, it was very much in service of personal reasons: for self-preservation and to create space and time in my life for the things I want to do and accomplish. What immediately became apparent was the relevance this idea had to our craft. At first I thought about the edges of our physical frames and about attempting to find the limits of our staminas and ranges of motion. I considered boundaries in this way, like endpoints at the extremes of different spectrums. But I soon corrected that line of thinking, figuring instead that a boundary is actually a dividing line somewhere in the middle of two extremes, a point where something shifts and becomes something else.”

“And it was thrilling to be in a familiar space with such new norms. The performers seemed empowered by the vocalizations coming out of the audience, and when the bows turned into a dance party, it was a natural conclusion to this fully-engaging experience.” From @sydneyburrows1’s latest #criticaldraft, this time in response to Komansé Dance Theater’s ‘Skid’ by @raiannacbrown at @georgiatech’s #ferstcenterforthearts. "Akua Noni Parker (@onlyupward) is one of a handful of female dancers known for transitioning from a classical ballet career to a vibrant modern dance career, performing for over a decade with the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater (Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater). I had the pleasure of meeting Parker at the Ailey studios just days before the iconic company's 60th anniversary season at City Center. Below are some snippets from our expansive conversation where we caught up like old friends about her beginnings in dance, ballet vs. modern, being a black woman in the dance world and how this vegan model is also crafting a retirement plan as a ballet mistress and chef." Our newest writer, Djassi DaCosta Johnson (@djauniversal), writes the latest Studio Sessions, our ongoing dive into photographer @jimlafferty’s archives, up now on the site. @ Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater

ON OUR RADAR | BOSTON: “How do we accurately measure the shape of our desire?,” ask collaborators @bobbiejenesmith and #keirgogwilt. The title of their work, ‘With Care,’ refers back to the etymology of that word, “accuracy,” which Bobbi’s movements are built to exude. In the Dance Lab With Martha Graham

"It’s a sensorial shift for dancers to enter virtual reality, one that has changed their relationship with their bodies and with their dancing. 'You become so absorbed in your world that it’s almost freer,' Ms. Dalley-Smith said. 'You’re not so self-conscious; you’re not thinking or just feeling about what’s coming next. You’re fed by this world.'"

There were hits and misses, and a spirit of exploration, as the Graham company tried out new technologies during a two-week Google residency.
