UnSequenced Open Pitch Call

As the Season 03 schedule of { DIYdancer Magazine }'s podcast comes together, we welcome pitches from you!

Specifically, we are looking to feature dance works that exist or push outside of the Western canon and we are keen to feature choreographers working in new forms, in or outside of traditional spaces/venues, at any stage in their career.
You can listen to UnSequenced wherever you get your podcasts to familiarize yourself with our format. We welcome pitches that serve simply as nominations of works for us to pursue, as well as pitches for an episode you wish to report yourself. Let us know who and what has been moving you!
Fill out this pitch form: https://lnkd.in/dgZ_KKS and email it to [email protected] before the end of October.

UnSequenced is a podcast in which we discover the stories and emotions behind the movement. Each episode dives deep into the creative process with a choreographer, what compels them as an artist, what drives their artistic decisions for a particular work, and what unexpected things come up along the way. This is a sound-rich, highly produced podcast, drawing inspiration from the formats of shows like NPR’s This American Life and Radiotopia’s Song Exploder.

TOMORROW night 9/23 8p EST on Zoom: Our Q & A series with the featured artists of UnSequenced continues with choreographer and creative director Lara Wilson (featured in episode 04). In addition to discussing the boundaries practice that led to the creation of her 2019 work 'How To Draw an Outline,' Wilson will also lead us in an intimate mini workshop of her personal and creative methods around boundaries.

"Learning to acknowledge, set, and challenge our personal boundaries is not just exceedingly relevant to this moment, it can empower us all. Particularly among women, q***r, and gender-nonconforming people, many of us dancers are used to overextending ourselves—often as a way of life. In 2019, I decided to make a dance to learn what boundaries were and how I could get some."

REGISTER with link below. Event is free, no movement experience necessary.

Dance plus Monday motivation...in a field where being a hard worker is basically the cost of entry, we have been shocked by Jacob Jonas' work ethic and drive. In the biggest feature of our forthcoming Issue 03, Jonas produced 15 separate photoshoots in a love letter to the dance artists of L.A. Meanwhile, in true DIY-dancing spirit he is directing his own Jacob Jonas The Company and producing yet another magical @CamerasandDancers event in Berlin with @staatsballettberlin, oh and choreographing a stellar spot for Entireworld...

05/16/2019

“While all of the pieces in @fullradiusdance’s 25th MAD Festival were captivating and had unique themes, Corian Ellisor’s ‘My People,’ performed by Ellisor and Alejandro Abarca, was the work that gave me goosebumps and made me think deeply about the different ways movement can be used to encourage political change.

Opening the work, Abarca moved fluidly across the stage without ever letting his limbs lift from the ground, fully embodying the smooth voice of Mahalia Jackson singing the classic “Summertime.” When Ellisor took over the solo work, growing from his casual lying position on the ground, he shifted versions of Abarca’s movements to the vertical space. He maintained the slow, almost casual, energy of the opening, before joining Abarca for a more intricate duet with jumps, rolls, and lots of sustained inversions. Dancing side by side in blue and red jumpsuits, the duo had a maturity that comes from a longtime dance partnership like Ellisor and Abarca’s. They are longtime friends and collaborators, and both came to Atlanta after meeting at the University of Houston. Although their movement qualities are quite different, with Abarca shining in effortless floorwork and Ellisor captivating with expansive gestures, their textures blend together powerfully. After the tranquil voice of Jackson slowed and stopped, a recording of a newscaster jolted the space with a new sense of urgency. The recording spoke of teenage boys being detained at the Mexican border and described families who were separated after trying to enter the United States. Ellisor and Abarca’s heavy breathing added to the soundscore, enhancing the struggle and anguish displayed with the choreography. The recording brought in a harsh reality and dissolved the fantasy world of smooth jazz, but Ellisor and Abarca continued to move together, supporting one another. The piece concluded with Abarca and Ellisor embracing each other, which seemed both a hopeful gesture and a desperate attempt to hold onto loved ones.” @sydneyburrows1 #criticaldraft #changedemandsmovement
