“…There have been a spate of incidents, almost daily, where white Americans have called law enforcement on black Americans who were engaged in the “criminal acts” of sitting in a Starbucks waiting for a meeting, napping in a common area at a Yale University graduate dormitory, walking a stroller in a public park, checking out of an Airbnb, working out at a gym, or returning purchased items—with receipts—to a Victoria Secrets…This constant barrage of racist intimidation, at its most extreme resulting in the inhumane taking of black life by paranoid police officers and white vigilantes, continues historical practices that have disenfranchised black people of the right to life, liberty, free movement, and property."

Mary Corse's project recalls debates around Newtonian optics. Having decomposed white light into the prismatic spectrum, Sir Isaac Newton was charged by John Keats with 'unweaving the rainbow' in his great Lamia of 1819. For Corse, the study of the physical world does not dismantle aesthetics but encourages on a shared epistemological ground the possibility of a non-disinterested position of engagement. Of course, personal observation of fleeting incidents—like water droplets appearing in the sky as some gorgeous Technicolor phantom, or a brilliant twinkling monochrome ceasing to exist and returning anew in flickering alternationz—survive in the post-Newtonian world, where the development of quantum mechanics emphasizes the impact of the act of observation on the observed. Corse's paintings serve as humbling reminders of this fact." - Suzanne Hudson from the gorgeous new Mary Corse monograph from @inventorypress & @kaynegriffincorcoran - see Corse’s work at @diabeacon @diaartfoundation starting today! "Bio" is now available for preorder on InventoryPress.com! Author Maryam Monalisa Gharavi is an artist, poet, and theorist. “Bio” captures a span of 365 days during which she updated the 160-character “bio” section of her Twitter account each day.
While tweets are regularly captured by corporate data storage centers this “bio” section remains the only untraceable and non-archived part of the software’s superstructure. Bio, immersively created via a proprietary app, ultimately left no record of itself, complicating the normative binaries of online/offline and digital/print.

Now on view at the Rose Art Museum at Brandeis University: Blueprint for Counter Education

Inaugurated during the volatile and transformative late 1960s, the unconventional publication Blueprint for Counter Education introduced the tools for a radical pedagogical model. A project of Brandeis Sociology Professor and Chair Maurice Stein and his student, Larry Miller, this “classroom in a box” encouraged students to shape an educational environment from their own lived experiences. Blueprint’s open-ended charts mapped a world of ideas, from the avant-garde to the postmodern, in a form that presaged the internet, allowing readers to chart multiple courses of thinking and discovery that anticipated the prevalence of search engines, social media, and the quick connection of the hyperlink.

Organized by Caitlin Julia Rubin, Assistant Curator.
On view March 2- July 8

This exhibition is presented as part of a citywide partnership of arts and educational institutions organized to recognize the outsized role greater Boston played in the history and development of technology. The Institute of Contemporary Art/Boston initiated this partnership to link concurrent exhibitions and programs related to the themes of the ICA exhibition Art in the Age of the Internet, 1989 to Today.

Blueprint for Counter Education is made possible through support from the Lois Foster Fund and the generous contribution of Video Data Bank at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

Molly Nesbit speaks with Thomas Hill on Vassar College Radio about "Midnight"

February 14, 2018.

Molly Nesbit, Professor of Art at Vassar College, talks about her new book, Midnight: The Tempest Essays, just published in 2017 by Inventory Books.

“'What Was An Author?' Right from the opening words of these Tempest Essays, we see the great Molly Nesbit at work undoing and radically repositioning the time codes for the artist. She creates a living archive of critical debates, politics and philosophies. She paints a vivid picture of the many junctions between people, objects, quasi-objects and non-objects throughout the twentieth century and into the twenty-first. This is a true protest against forgetting as well as a toolbox for contemporary art criticism. Call it a guidebook to the labyrinth of reality.” —Hans Ulrich Obrist

Daniel Birnbaum on Molly Nesbit's Midnight the Tempest Essays, in Artforum's Year in Review:

"The arrival of the second volume in her Pre-Occupations series makes clear that Nesbit has found a way to combine her expertise as an art historican with her interest in experimental modes of display.... ...I like everything about these delicious books, not just the writer's observational skills or the subjects of her essays—from Dewey to Alexander Dorner to Godard and Gabriel Orozco—but also the way the pictures become operational. They are no mere illustrations... ...The way her books are curated rather than edited seems to exemplify this approach to the domain of incarnated thinking that is art."

“It’s odd, but it’s almost like everything is true in art… Just because you do one thing, say you make a black painting, doesn’t mean making a white painting next invalidates it. It’s all true.” Corse questions objectivity in her retrospective at Kayne Griffin Corcoran. One more day to see the exhibition before it closes on November 11.

Excited to see the news that Whitney Museum of American Art will present Mary Corse’s first museum survey in June 2018. In May 2018 Dia:Beacon will also open a gallery dedicated to Corse featuring four recently acquired paintings.

“Her key contributions to the history of American art rest squarely within the realm of painting–but painting as a site for material, compositional, and perceptual experimentation around the subject of light;” Whitney curator Kim Conaty says of Corse’s work. #marycorse #contemporarypainting #lightandspace #laartists

Matt Keegan’s “Replicate” now on view at @ccva_harvard at @HarvardUniversity until January 7, 2018.
“To replicate is to reproduce. A replicate is a close copy; in music, a replicate is a tone one or more octaves above or below the given tone. This multiplicity of meanings, even in the title of this exhibition, reveals the uncertainty and open nature of language.”
