Open Doors Casting

Open Doors Casting Founded in August 2010 to help with Casting ‘Ideas shape the course of history.’ - John Maynard Keynes ‘Ideas are useless unless used.’ - Theodore Levitt

This organization began as an aside for actor Glen Kinnaird (Greg Curtis) as he explores ins and outs of the NYC and US theater community. Assisting with Castings for one national non-equity tour and another off Broadway production, plus working as a stage manager for an off Broadway production helped spark the creative energy to give birth to this organization. If you are interested in how to we can help you or maybe you want to work with us to help us grow, please contact me ASAP.

May is Lower East Side History Month! In celebration, we’re co-hosting a special masterclass with Poetic Theater Productions and led by hip hop/theatre artist Baba Israel. We'll focus on bringing personal stories that center around the LES into monologue, spoken word or song.

All are welcome—no experience required! Expect to improvise, write, move, beatbox, reflect and share in both small and big groups.

While in the Birmingham area…
I need help with something fun, a AL local playwright who is a friend sent me a play they wrote in 2015, I directed a reading of it in NYC with a new plays group. Due to the setting and the time period along with a few topics that are too sensitive now, I asked my friend if they could think about changing the setting and time of the play to a modern time and then they could address current social and political topics in new this gut punching comedy.
They took my advice and now I would like to hold a (Zoom) reading of the play while here in Alabama. I may produce a local AL production later this summer, but I have my sights set on a NY production in the fall directed and produced by myself.
I am seeking local Birmingham actors (or community actors) to assist us on April 15th, 2024. I really would not mind if men wanted to play the roles as gender non specific is a hot topic now. Please let me know if you see this and want to be involved. Private message me or text me if you have my cell.
Here is the cast list.

Mattie Mae – (Mid 40’s) Third of the five sisters, outspoken, critical, and pushy
Vestal – (Late 40’s) Second of the five sisters, soft-spoken and empathetic, fearful of what others think
Gladys – (Mid 50’s) Eldest of the five sisters, kind and motherly
Dixie – (Mid to Late 30’s) Fourth of the five sisters, educated, well spoken, reserved
Betty Ann- (Mid to Late 20’s) Youngest of the five sisters, pregnant, religious and judgmental
Judy Jean- (24 years old) plain, eccentric/mentally unstable cousin to the sisters

Sheriff Ward/Tommy Bob – (Late 30’s to 60, Tommy Bob plays Mid to late 40’s) Both are good ole boys, both from the south. Tommy Bob is a soft-spoken youthful gay man

The reading will be one night this week April 22-25 around 6:30pm. Location: Online

From Daniel Simon.

I am deeply sorry to discover that our dear friend C.j. Gelfand died late July. We were trying to reach her for weeks. I had been working on a project with her and health complications delayed us. I loved her artistry so much I waited for her recovery. She was so passionate about completing the work to the very end. C.J was a remarkable person and performer. We love her and will miss her very much.

Thank you for your friendship C.j. Gelfand
May you fly with the angels and rest in the arms of our creator. 🙏🌈❤️

"If you make decisions based upon other people's reactions or judgments, you'll make really boring choices. If you are safe about the choices you make, you don't grow." - Heath Ledger.

This applies both in real life and in acting. When you make safe & polite choices to make the scene look good and nicely well laid out, you lose the essence of your creativity & the story. You've not gone beyond your comfort zone. We want to see the raw, in-the-moment, instinctive, bold choices your character chooses to make.

That is when you get out of plot land and discover the story!
