Hunter College Popular Music Combos

Hunter College Popular Music Combos The Popular Music Combos is a class taught at Hunter College each semester by Prof. D.D. Jackson. This course provides an opportunity to study and perform the popular music styles of today.

In our various groups we cover potentially a wide range of genres, from Jazz, Latin, Pop and Rock, through Reggae, Metal, Hip-Hop, R&B, and beyond (depending often largely on student interest.) Our goal overall is to help develop the tools necessary to work in today’s popular music scene. Each of the typically four total ensembles usually consist of a rhythm section (guitar and/or piano, bass, drums/ percussion), with 2-3 instrumentalists and/or up to 1 vocalist, as determined by the instructor following the auditions that take place the first Wed. after the start of each semester in Brecher Hall (635 Hunter North), from 12:10-3 pm. [More audition info will be posted closer to the date for those registered, but essentially: students perform 2 contrasting non- classical pieces, with results posted within 24 hours; if a student doesn’t get in, they can drop the class immediately with no penalty). There are also at least 3 officially scheduled and mandatory public performances each semester (2 Crossover Concerts and 1 Final Concert). Finally, once a year, we also typically go into a professional recording studio to record a CD (tracks from which are posted here), and we try and bring in 2-3 guests/year to share their experiences and play with the class in performance.

Mission: Throughout the course, emphasis is placed on the importance of learning to play with others and developing stage presence and confidence. We also explore other subjects such as rehearsal preparation, choosing repertoire/building a set, critical listening/self-critiquing, the basics of improvisation, arranging techniques, and music theory, and the business of music.

Come Sunday (Duke Ellington) - D.D. Jackson conducting the Brooklyn College Big Band (remotely)

It's been a particular challenge doing music ensembles in the "shelter-in-place" age but am proud of what we achieved with our Brooklyn College Global Jazz Big Band. Here is my arrangement of Duke Ellington's "Come Sunday" recorded remotely (which I audio edited and video/mixed) - it I think captures the intent of what we were planning to perform live. So long as large ensembles are still being offered at CUNY this Fall remotely we would like big band to continue to be included (which it currently is not) - hopefully this video can help demonstrate that we have a viable path forward that engages students (and reflects the diversity of Brooklyn College in the process):

Dear Campus Community,

The Brooklyn College Global Jazz Big Band returns this Fall and is open to all members of our community (both graduate and undergraduate, including classical music majors, community players, and students from outside Brooklyn College) who play an instrument and are interested in performing jazz-oriented music (no improvisation experience necessary). The Big Band meets Tuesday’s (starting Aug. 27th), from 6:40-9:10 pm in TOW367. Registration encouraged but not mandatory, provided you attend the rehearsals (no auditions required).

Directed by D.D. Jackson (http://ddjackson.com), the big band emphasizes original music/student arrangements, and each semester embraces a particular world music cultural style as a jumping off point and invites guests to come sit in. Each semester also culminates in a final concert in Buchwald at our brand new Tow Center for the Performing Arts.

Here’s a sample of their collaboration last semester with members of Brooklyn Raga Massive, in a piece written by recent Chamber Music America New Jazz Works recipient and Indian violinist Arun Ramamurthy, and arranged by Global Jazz Masters student Julian Velasco:

Applications still being accepted for admission into the Brooklyn College Global Jazz Masters Program (Spring/19 start!)

The Conservatory of Music of Brooklyn College is pleased to offer their Master of Music in Global and Contemporary Jazz Studies program under the directorship of Emmy Award-winning jazz pianist/composer/producer D.D. Jackson, with applications still being accepted for the Spring/19 semester start on a rolling basis until prior to the auditions (which take place in Brooklyn College’s brand-new Tow Center for the Performing Arts, on Dec. 18th, 2018).

The program proposes a truly global jazz perspective, moving beyond the traditional bebop and neo-traditional focus toward a more inclusive definition that embraces the exciting variety of world music and other conceptual influences we believe essential to the aspiring jazz musician in today’s age. Internationally-recognized faculty, an expanded ensemble program, a Conservatory Big Band, and access to New York jazz resources — coupled with the low cost of CUNY tuition — results in a competitive and progressive program that prepares the student for the performance and study of jazz as it is practiced by today's innovators - and beyond.
