Hi -

I'm writing this from Westport, Connecticut, which was one of the early sources of the outbreak of COVIS-19 (yesterday's NYT) in the Northeastern United States.

First and foremost, I hope that you are safe, healthy, and prepared with resources.

New York and many other cities have weathered crises throughout history and come out stronger for it. This time is different, and more will be needed than in the past from us to get back on track and heal.

Over the past several years we have built a network of international innovators, investors, and economic development professionals. We wish to share interesting initiatives to be better prepared for whatever comes next.

While there aren’t any best practices to respond to it, a couple of novel trends of actions are emerging in response to the pandemic:

Trends
- Cities and governments are leveraging technology and crowdsourced ideas (German government’s C19 hackathon last weekend)
- Google docs, Zoom and Slack have become the powerful tools to collaborate, inform and plan (C19 startup pitches on a Google spreadsheet)
- Surveys have increased importance to guide policies and prioritize support (for instance, 90% of NYC companies/respondents will probably ask for a bridge loan, Tech:NYC)

Examples / best practices
- German Government hackathon (translated “UsVsVirus”): 500 concrete ideas have been selected from thousands of applications (German only – there wasn’t enough time)
- Social Media Weekend: full-fledged online conference organized in only one week with tools and advice ($)
- Tech:NYC: daily updates with resources and Slack channel to coordination and create awareness for initiatives
Industry collaboration: Small business resource platform on - Trello for cryotherapy salons
- NYCEDC: Private sector engagement for healthcare supply
- Korea: Privat sector engagement successfully implemented (WSJ)

Personal newsletters/channels
- Albert Wenger: one of the leading thinkers in NYC tech and UBI adviser to Andrew Yang's campaign
- Charlie O’Donnell: NYC-based VC with updates on the crisis, tech and personal thoughts
- Sam Altman: Ex-Y-Combinator president with google sheets to pitch ideas
- Sree Sreenivasan: Social media guru with daily video updates and guests

Please reach out if you like to be on the update emails.

Stay safe.

Thanks,
Marc

The silver mustache reminds people in the U.S. of Lyft. Across South America, the logo is known for Rappi. The Bogota-based startup founded in 2015 has seen rapid growth, and with the recent $1B investment from Softbank, the company is one of the two dozen unicorns in the region. While still at an early stage, Rappi and the other unicorns demonstrate how innovation is happening outside the centers in the U.S. One healthcare startup told us: "Our valuation is well below the U.S. startups in the space, because we are based in South America. It's good and bad at the same time." Our friends at the AP had a fascinating piece about Rappi and the immigration situation in Venezuela, seen here.

It is one of our favorite attractions in the City: What retailers manage to build buzz, need to restrict access to avoid overcrowding, or are simply cool? The Apple store lines on 5th Avenue are legendary, but there are few new ones. Longest lines at the moment? The Starbuck flagship store in Chelsea. We couldn't get in, but Eater NY has a great review. Runners-up are Story in Chelsea (with the coolest tag line ever: Point of view of a Magazine, Changes like a Gallery, Sells Things like a Store), and Dr Smood near Grand Central Terminal, with their claim to be "Probably the Healthiest Cafe in New York City."

Not many have likely seen the website or even heard of "Haven" – at least not yet. Haven is New York City's newest addition to innovation in health care – and not just any addition: Haven was formed by the leaders of Amazon, Berkshire Hathaway, and JPMorgan Chase in their words "because they have been frustrated by the quality, service, and high costs that their employees and families have experienced in the U.S. healthcare system." We relate to their concerns and wish them much success with Haven - it would be good for all New Yorkers.

We approach New York City as the "Window into the Future." One can certainly argue that in terms of bold architecture, other megacities – especially in Asia, are ahead. However, in terms of the urban living of the future, the City is still ahead. This week's opening of the $25-billion-project Hudson Yards is fascinating in many ways, and we look particularly what it means for other cities and the way we will live in the future. Some of the most successful companies globally will move offices to Hudson Yards for one reason: The future of work seems to be there. For more subscribe to our newsletter.

Understanding Intellectual Property for Media Startups - New York International

#IP Infringement Law isn't keeping pace with rapidly changing technology. This is a key issue for #media #startups, one often overlooked. http://bit.ly/1V6HByE

Intellectual Property (IP) infringement is a complex and expensive issue facing most businesses in almost every industry, none more so than media where the lines have become blurred on what is honest use and what’s ‘purposeful infringement’. Often, a startup’s naivety and limited resources means the…
