We chose to donate to Black Lives Matter because their mission “is to eradicate white supremacy and build local power to intervene in violence inflicted on Black communities by the state and vigilantes” and this is exactly what our country needs now. After making an incredibly strong name for herself onscreen, Kerry Washington has taken her talents behind the camera as a Producer and Director. She recently produced The ACLU documentary "The Fight" and her much anticipated limited series collaboration with Reese Witherspoon Little Fires Hulu is coming out soon. Washington said to Variety in a 2016 article "I believe strongly in the importance of having a seat at the table" when asked about her reasons behind becoming a Producer. Washington has not only had a seat at the table since then, she's been the running table. Washington's Production Company Simpson Street, named after the street her mom grew up on in the Bronx, has 21 producing credits since its formation in 2016 and we're certain that's just the beginning. Thanks for taking the journey with us this month to celebrate six incredibly influential black women in film as part of our #blackhistorymonth highlights!

According to the National Museum of Women's History website, Ava DuVernay has made history as a black woman in film, despite not beginning her film career until age 32. She is the first black woman to win Best Director at Sundance, to be nominated for Best Director at the Golden Globes, to direct a film nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars and to direct a film with a budget over $100 million. DuVernay has since founded 'Array Now'; an independent film distribution company & resource collective dedicated to amplifying works by people of color and women around the world. Cheers to much more success! #BlackHistoryMonth

Join us in celebrating all things Melina Matsoukas! Not only is she a two-time #Grammy winner and four-time #VMA winner for smash hit videos "We Found Love" and "Formation", Matsoukas made her directorial film debut this year with Lena Waithe's Queen & Slim. According to her biography on PRETTYBIRD, Matsoukas has multiple deals on the horizon and recently announced a first look deal with FX. Needless to say, we'll be seeing much more of Melina Matsoukas in 2020. And we couldn't be more excited about it.

Today we’re honoring stand-up comedian Moms Mabley for a #galentinesday / #blackhistorymonth crossover appreciation post! Born in 1894, Moms Mabley, according to her @imdb biography, was one of the most successful entertainers on the vaudeville stage before becoming one of the most successful stand-up comedians of her time. She was notably one of the only black performers in stand-up and one of the only openly gay comedians in history. She was billed as The Funniest Woman in the World up until her passing in 1975. Thank you Moms for your pioneering work and the decades of laughs!

Continuing our highlights of influential black women in Film & Television in honor of Black History Month. Today: Issa Rae, an icon in the truest sense of the word!

Not only was Issa Rae's web series "The Mis-Adventures of Awkward Black Girl" a smash hit when it premiered in 2011, she has since published a New York Times Best Selling collection of essays, earned a Golden Globe nominated for her HBO half-hour comedy "Insecure" and first made Forbes' "30 Under 30" in 2012. Join us in celebrating Issa Rae's groundbreaking work and her new film "The Photograph" in theaters on February 14th. #blackhistorymonth

In honor of Black History Month, we're highlighting influential black women in Film & Television. First up: Madeline Anderson!

According to the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture (great place to visit in DC if you've never been!), "Madeline Anderson is often credited as being the first black woman to produce and direct a televised documentary film, the first black woman to produce and direct a syndicated tv series, the first black employee at New York-based public television station WNET, and one of the first black women to join the film editor’s union". Join us in celebrating Madeline Anderson's many accomplishments and pioneering work! #blackhistorymonth

Oscars: Women Shut Out for Best Director

This Oscar's season, we strongly encourage you to do more than rant on social media about the lack of representation--

(although we will continue to post relevant articles such as https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/no-women-nominated-best-director-at-2020-oscars-1268599/)

Side note: Lulu Wang & Greta Gerwig T-Shirt purchases skyrocketed after yesterday's snub 🙋‍♀️🙋‍♀️🙋‍♀️

Bong Joon-ho, Sam Mendes, Todd Phillips, Martin Scorsese and Quentin Tarantino are nominated in the best director category at the 2020 Oscars.
