This week on A Girl's Gotta Know we learned there are different degrees of pelvic organ prolapse, ranging from 0 to 4. Zero means there are no symptoms, while 4 indicates the organ has descended outside the body. Since your pelvic floor changes over time, it's important to strengthen your pelvic floor in an effort to prevent reaching a 4 in prolapse descention. This is especially if you're pregnant or planning on becoming pregnant. Check out Episode 4 to find out how you can prevent pelvic organ prolapse, and where to seek further guidance and treatment. https://youtu.be/qeJm20WUdpE

Many women experience pain before, during, or after intercourse throughout their lives, but most do not seek treatment. As Dr. Shrikhande says in Episode 3, underlying causes of dyspareunia can be silent diseases like endometriosis, in which case patients are often made to feel like the pain they're experiencing is just in their heads. Dyspareunia, however, is very real and the pain can be treated through proper care from experts. Watch the full episode on IGTV or YouTube to learn more about treatments for dysapreunia.

Dr. Sneha Gazi and Dr. Shrikhande also offer advice on at-home remedies such as meditation and deep breathing.

We interviewed a series of women throughout the 5 episodes of "A Girl's Gotta Know" as a way to explore pelvic floor dysfunction through the eyes of women who don't identify as experts in the field. Our interviewees were instrumental to this project, and we're extremely grateful for their generous contribution to make this series happen. Here are a few of our favorite interviewee moments from Episode 1: Pelvic Floor 101, premiering this Wednesday on IGTV and YouTube! Check out our series trailer in the link below:

August 2020 marks 100 years since women were finally given the right to vote! But did you know there were still state laws that got in the way of Black female voters participating in the 1920 election? According to @natgeo's article “For Black women, the 19th amendment didn’t end their fight to vote”, many states continued to enact the same voter suppression legislation such as the requirement for literacy tests, poll taxes & grandfather clauses that had been keeping Black men out of voting booths for years. There even was a rule in many states that banned Black women from voting if they weren’t registered 6 months prior to the election. Suffragettes continued their fight by starting suffrage schools that taught Black women how to pay poll taxes and how to pass the literacy tests. Today, despite the 19th amendment and the Voting Rights Act of 1965, we’re seeing a resurgence of voter restriction such as valid forms of ID being required in some states, the absence of accessible polling sites, and now the issue of mail-in ballots. Women may have gained the right to vote 100 years ago, but the fight continues. Make sure you’re registered to vote at vote.org🗳

After making an incredibly strong name for herself onscreen, Kerry Washington has taken her talents behind the camera as a Producer and Director. She recently produced The ACLU documentary "The Fight" and her much anticipated limited series collaboration with Reese Witherspoon Little Fires Hulu is coming out soon. Washington said to Variety in a 2016 article "I believe strongly in the importance of having a seat at the table" when asked about her reasons behind becoming a Producer. Washington has not only had a seat at the table since then, she's been the running table. Washington's Production Company Simpson Street, named after the street her mom grew up on in the Bronx, has 21 producing credits since its formation in 2016 and we're certain that's just the beginning. Thanks for taking the journey with us this month to celebrate six incredibly influential black women in film as part of our #blackhistorymonth highlights!

According to the National Museum of Women's History website, Ava DuVernay has made history as a black woman in film, despite not beginning her film career until age 32. She is the first black woman to win Best Director at Sundance, to be nominated for Best Director at the Golden Globes, to direct a film nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars and to direct a film with a budget over $100 million. DuVernay has since founded 'Array Now'; an independent film distribution company & resource collective dedicated to amplifying works by people of color and women around the world. Cheers to much more success! #BlackHistoryMonth

She was notably one of the only black performers in stand-up and one of the only openly gay comedians in history. She was billed as The Funniest Woman in the World up until her passing in 1975.
