OPEN CALL FOR APPLICATIONS:
Cinephilia Productions and Filmlab: Palestine in partnership with El Gouna Film Festival and Drosos Foundation invite Arab film professionals residing in the Arab world to apply for the 2nd edition of Sunbird Stories, a state-of-the-art development and production program that intends to develop five narrative short films for youth and children audiences across the Arab World.

A jury of industry professionals will award two projects during the closing ceremony of CineGouna, each $20,000 plus in-kind production and post-production services.

To apply, please read the eligibility requirements and project criteria carefully prior to submitting your application. Application deadline: August 10.

Cinephilia Productions and FilmLab Palestine are happy to announce the jury of the 1st edition of Sunbird Stories: Suha Araj, Aya Al Blouchi, and Abu Bakr Shawky. The jury will award the Sunbird Stories Jury Prize of $20,000, divided equally between two projects.

Suha Araj is a Palestinian American film director. Her film The Cup Reader, shot in Palestine, screened at the Tribeca Film Festival and was awarded The Next Great Filmmaker Award at the Berkshire International Film Festival. She has received support for her work from the Sundance Film Festival, Torino Film Lab, Independent Filmmaker Project, Berlinale Talent Project Market, Center for Asian American Media and Cine Qua Non Lab. She is the 2018 recipient of Tribeca/Chanel Through Her Lens production funding for her new film Rosa. Rosa premiered at the Blackstar Festival in 2020 and was the recipient of the Best Short Narrative and the Lionsgate/Starz short film award.

Aya Al Blouchi assumed the role of Young Audience Coordinator in Beirut at Metropolis Art Cinema Association. In 2013, Al Blouchi joined the Doha Film Institute in Qatar as Youth Programmes Specialist, and is a core programmer for the annual Ajyal Film Festival. Driven by a passion to contribute to a sustainable film industry ecosystem in the region, she started to finance and produce various shorts and feature-length films working closely with emerging filmmakers.

Abu Bakr Shawky is an Egyptian-Austrian filmmaker. He studied Political Science at the American University in Cairo and received and MFA in Film production from NYU Tisch School of the Arts. His graduation project at Tisch
was his debut feature YOMEDDINE, which premiered in 2018 in the Main Competition of Cannes Film Festival. The film received the Francois Chalais Award in Cannes and was Egypt's official submission for the 91st Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film. in 2018, Shawky was named by Variety as MENA Talent of the Year and was listed by Forbes Magazine among the top five Arab directors on the global stage.

OPEN CALL FOR APPLICATIONS
Launched by Cinephilia Productions and Filmlab: Palestine, and with the goal to create a positive change in the emotional and psychological fabric of the next generation of Arab youth, SUNBIRD STORIES is a state-of-the-art development and production program that intends to develop six to eight narrative short films in the often overlooked genres – children, teen, family, and coming-of-age – by emerging and up-and-coming Arab filmmakers. Two projects will receive the Sunbird Stories Production Prize of $10,000 each plus in-kind production and post-production services.

This 1st edition of Sunbird Stories is aimed at Palestinian filmmakers living in Palestine and/or in the diaspora.

برنامج "حكايات طائر الشمس"، الذي أطلقته شركة سينيفيليا للإنتاج و مؤسسة فيلم لاب – فلسطين بهدف تحقيق تغيير إيجابي في النسيج العاطفي والنفسي للجيل القادم من الشباب العرب ، هو برنامج سينمائي للتطوير والانتاج. يسعى البرنامج إلى تطوير 6 – 8 أفلام روائية قصيرة للأطفال والمراهقين والأسرة واليافعين من قبل صناع الأفلام العرب الناشئين والواعدين.

سيحصل اثنان من الأفلام المشاركة على جائزة قيمتها 10,000 $ لكل فيلم بالإضافة إلى خدمات عينية في مرحلتي الإنتاج وما بعد الإنتاج.

Congrats to Nadine Salib for receiving the Cinephilia Bound 2020 Jury Prize for her feature narrative film “The Land Beyond” (Egypt). 👏🏽 👏🏽
