Rehearsal Information
Rehearsals are usually on Tuesday evenings, 18:00-20:30, in Conference Room B, C, D or E, inside the Conference Building of UN Headquarters. The United Nations Singers are a recreational choir formed in 1947 under the UN Staff Recreation Council to spread the message of harmony and understanding through music. As a microcosm of the world, the group is composed largely of present and former staff of the UN and its agencies and permanent missions. The Singers come from nearly 30 countries. They rehearse in their leisure time, outside office hours, but are usually granted official leave for concert tours. With a repertoire of folk songs and choral music sung mostly a ca****la in some 50 languages and wearing colorful national costumes, the choir has given many concerts at the UN itself and also in churches and concert halls in the New York area. In addition, the choir is frequently called upon to perform at festivals and other commemorative events. The Singers are not funded by the United Nations and do not represent the UN in any official capacity. Acting as unofficial goodwill ambassadors, the UN Singers have travelled widely: they have performed in the United States and Canada, South America, the Caribbean, Europe (Spain, Switzerland, Germany to name a few) and Asia (China, Philippines, Japan and South Korea). They have taken part four times in the international Harmonie Festival in Lindenholtzhausen, near Limburg, Germany, until 2011. In 2008, the Singers participated in two music festivals in Spain. In 2012 they were invited to Japan for the fourth time, and are returning there in August 2015. In 2010, the Singers travelled to China for the first time: they performed in Beijing and in the United Nations Pavilion at the Shanghai Expo 2010; they will be there again in September 2015. In May 2012, the group was invited back to Japan for the fifth time, giving concerts in Hiroshima, Nagasaki and Okinawa with proceeds to benefit the 2011 earthquake/tsunami survivors. The conductor and music director is Mr. Guillermo Vaisman from Argentina. He joined the UN Singers in 2004.

UN Singers - Lasst uns froh und munter sein (Germany - Arr. H. Schallehn)

The holiday season has come again!

While a year full of challenges is coming to its end, we reflect on the many blessings that help us every day. For us, Music is the most precious gift. Music can help humanity build resilience and strengthen social bonds. Music can bring up memories and emotions. While words prompt thoughts, Music makes us feel!

The UN Singers are delighted to present the last virtual Choir video of the year:
"Lasst uns froh und munter sein" ("Let’s be happy and cheerful") is a traditional folk carol from Germany’s Rhineland region, traditionally sung around Saint Nicholas Eve on December 5 th .
With an upbeat tune, it describes how kids happily anticipate gifts from St. Nicholas, who would place small presents during the night, on the plates or boots left out in the doorway.

This time of the year let music embrace us. May the love of this holiday season and the beauty of every tune enlighten our days and warm our hearts.

UNSRC Singers Fundraising Campaign, organized by Carmela Zenarosa

The UNSRC Singers is a recreational club founded in 1947 under the UN Staff Recreation Council to spread the message of harmony and understanding through choral music. The group is composed largely of present and former staff of the UN Secretariat, Agencies, Funds and Programmes from nearly 30 countries, as well as family members and some guest talented singers from New York City. Currently, the choir is under the music directorship of Maestro Guillermo Vaisman. We sing a repertoire of primarily international folk songs arranged for choral performance sung mostly in a ca****la in their original languages while wearing colorful national costumes. We traditionally produce a summer concert and a holiday concert annually, and perform at festivals and other commemorative events.

After more than 70 years of singing together week by week and performing live to different audiences, the unprecedented CoVid-19 pandemic has forced the UN Singers to find alternative ways to continue delivering their inspiring mission to spread the message of peace through the art of choral music. For nearly 8 months, the Choir has been rehearsing virtually every week (via Zoom) and has been able to proudly present, for the first time ever, 3 virtual choir videos.

Signore delle Cime
Eh Yahwe Kumama
Lamma Badaa Yatathanna

It is in this context that we are seeking your support and generosity. The unique challenges being faced this year have represented a critical financial crisis for the UN Singers. Not being able to perform on stage has significantly decreased the resources for the Choir’s operation and subsistence. We are firm believers that music can help humanity to build resilience and strengthen social bonds and it is now, more than ever, in the face of these unparalleled times, that we are committed to make every effort to keep the Choir alive.

We take this opportunity to extend our gratitude for the love and support that the UN Singers continue to receive from our family, friends and communities, and we thank you in advance for supporting us during these very challenging times.

UN Singers - Lamma Badaa Yatathanna (trad. Andalusian, Arr. Joy Ondra Hirokawa)

The UN Singers continue to persevere through this challenging time. No one knows when in-person performances and rehearsals will resume and so the choir continues to rehearse virtually every week as they have done for most of the year, only breaking for two weeks in the summer. Our members find that seeing the other singers and singing with them, albeit remotely, adds joy and optimism to their week. Some find the video recording experience to be tiring, but still, all strive to achieve their personal best in their performance. Music director Guillermo Vaisman puts the videos together, adding elegance to their simplicity. In the end, it is always gratifying to see our videos premiere online and all the more rewarding that we reach a large and appreciative audience.

The UN Singers are happy to release their third video, Lamma Badaa Yatathanna, a traditional Andalusian/Arabic song arranged for 2-part voices and accompanied by piano, viola and cello.

While staying in the safety of our homes, we can still travel around the world through music.
We, UN Singers, invite you to travel with us around the world through our singing. In this Virtual Choir video, we “landed” in the Democratic Republic of Congo to sing “Eh Yahweh Kumama”, a traditional Congolese song in the Lingala language, arranged by Mº Michele Napolitano (Italy).

The United Nations Singers are delighted to present their first ever virtual choir video!

After more than 70 years of singing together week by week and performing live to an audience, the existing unprecedented pandemic led the UN Singers to think of different ways to continue delivering their inspiring mission; to spread the message of peace through the art of choral music.

It is now more than ever, in the face of these unparalleled times, that the UN Singers remain united, rehearsing remotely every week, maintaining their sense of purpose in friendship and humanity.

While not physically on stage, the UN Singers have gotten together virtually, performing Signore delle Cime (Lord of the Mountain Tops), a popular Italian song of prayer, written by Bepi De Marzi in 1958, at the age of 23. The song was dedicated to the author’s friend, Bepi Bertagnoli, who died in 1951 while climbing a mountain in Northern Italy.

The UN Singers express their profound gratitude to their followers and friends for accompanying them in this extraordinary journey. Enjoy the virtual performance and join the UN Singers, in a unison voice, to spread hope with the healing power that only music can give.

We can get through this, and music can help. Music is one of those things that almost everyone has the ability to connect with.

UN Singers Executive Committee is always working to find new ways to share the music and keep us singing in these difficult times.

A UST Singers Alumni Inspirational Tribute during the COVID-19 Pandemic #HeartHealHope

This project came into fruition through the collaborative efforts of the UST Singers alumni all over the world, with the support and guidance of their founder and conductor, Professor Fidel G. Calalang, Jr.
A symphony of almost 100 voices individually recorded using smartphones and tablets, each track was blended together with the help of today’s modern-day sound technology. It pays tribute to the true heroes in the front lines who selflessly put their lives at risk as humanity battles the novel disease and aims to provide a message of hope to those who silently bear the weight of loneliness and solitude in the midst of a lockdown.

This video is also dedicated to fellow UST Singers alumni front liners from all over the world:
