Sxip Shirey & Sarth - Continuum Fingerboard vs. Shruti Box

Sxip Shirey visited (Gr)album World Headquarters last week with an idea for a really cool piece.

This is based on his Shruti Box, which is a traditional Indian drone instrument working on bellows, similar to a harmonium ... or similar to an accordion.

Sxip opens up a chord using levers on the Shruti Box, then uses a mic highlight different notes within the chord.

Sarth is playing the Continuum Fingerboard, the patch has an unusual property where it plucks more quickly the more you push.

Everything in the Music Industry Has Changed Except the Song Itself

Mike Errico has some interesting words on this topic:

"But a live show doesn’t scale like a startup does. It’s a good model, but in that band, someone still had to spit blood and/or fire every night. Are there other options that can scale? And is that new environment something that takes into account the way we experience music, and a way we will also pay for it?"

Is it time for a disruptor to change what songs look and sound like?

What should I do about Youtube? | Zoë Keating

In case you somehow missed it (maybe you're living under a rock?) here's Zoe Keating's original blog post that sheds some light on her recent Google/YouTube interactions. There are big implications here for all musicians, independent and otherwise, and lots of people are weighing in -- what's your take on the situation?

What should I do about Youtube? My Google Youtube rep contacted me the other day. They were nice and took time to explain everything clearly to me, but the message was firm: I have to decide. I need...

What they found shouldn't be too surprising, because it's almost exactly what you'd expect. In 2004, the largest demo of CD b…

How speakers make sound - Animagraffs

Speakers (also called loudspeakers) push and pull surrounding air molecules in waves that the human ear interprets as sound. You could even say that hearing is movement detection. So what makes a speaker travel back and forth at just the right rate and distance, and how does that make sound?

Her songs stretch tall like pines dark with sweet prickly needles.
They are stark, beautiful and chilly sweet.

With this 3-song #Gralbum, cellist and vocalist Leah Coloff combines Clunk (classical meets punk) with shades of cabaret, horns and old-timey stylings. http://bit.ly/gralbum

The tracks are adapted from her record This Tree, available May 2014, and showcase beautiful examples of what the (Gr)album platform is capable of with rotatable 3D quilted boxes and animated oil paintings by artist Robert Lucy.

The videos for the song “Deserving” are a collage of regular 8 movies from Coloff’s own childhood in America’s quickly-vanishing West. Come experience this glimpse into Leah’s world, as her voice rings clear as a bell and straight to your heart.
