“The Elephant” by S. Difalco,

Salvatore Difalco is a Sicilian-Canadian poet and satirist. The Elephant This elephant confronted me directly, tusks in my gizzard, trunk in my junk. Its presence said I am here, son, whatcha gonna do about it? I wanted no part of it. I am a poet, I said, not a pragmatist. Eventually the elephant grew tired of my obduracy and departed, leaving behind several piles of smoking dung....

“Hold On” A Story by S. Staggs

Sara Staggs is a civil rights attorney and writer. She lives in Portland, Oregon, with her husband, two children and three chickens. Artwork by Edward Michael Supranowicz Hold On Oppressive humidity enveloped me as I stood in the graveyard, staring down at the sharp grass. I felt a drop of sweat run from my neck through my black wool dress. A small, white tent open on all sides protected the mourners from the Texas sun, but even in the shade August was no time to be outside....

Our Story

Welcome to In Parentheses: a place where works of great artists, thinkers, and critics comes together in the form of a literary magazine.

We hope that readers receive In Parentheses as a medium through which the evolution of human thought can be appreciated, nurtured and precipitated. It will present a dynamo of artistic expression, journalism, informal analysis of our daily world, entertainment of ideas considered lofty and criticism of today’s popular culture. The featured content does not follow any specific ideology except for that of intellectual expansion of the masses.

Founded in late 2011, In Parentheses prides itself upon analysis of the current condition of intelligence in the minds of these young people, and building a hypothesis for one looming question: what comes after Post-Modernism?

The idea for this magazine stems from a simple conversation regarding the aforementioned question, which drew out the need to identify our generation’s place in literary history.
