If Antidote doesn’t do the trick, there’s always alcohol. And then there are people like my mom – while she’s not much of a drinker – she’s a firm believer that a splash of alcohol makes almost every dish better. Growing up, my siblings and I were raised on cakes drenched in liquor, which—full disclosure—left me a lifelong purist when it comes to desserts. But for my mom, every cake recipe has its bottle.

Whether it is bubbly for soups, whiskey for sauces, or liquor for desserts, her kitchen is an endless experiment of boozy brilliance. Just last week, while making apple compote together, I turned my back for a second, and half a bottle of white wine was in the mix. So, it’s no surprise that when I presented her my very first batch of Antidote in 2010, she said: “A little alcohol is missing.”
