Brendan Hoffman will discuss his progression as a self-taught and self-employed photographer for more than 15 years. From his beginnings covering politics in Washington, DC, and on the campaign trail to his move overseas that expanded his practice to include conflict photography and long-form documentary, influenced by the field of social practice art. He will show projects from the Caucasus, Haiti, Iowa, and his 2020 feature story for National Geographic Magazine on the Indus River, which took him to Tibet, India, and Pakistan. Currently based in Kyiv, Ukraine for the past eight years, he will also share work from the Maidan Revolution and war in eastern Ukraine since 2014, as well as the recent Russian invasion.

The talk will include a Question-and-Answer session moderated by TPS Communications Director Alex Snyder. We’ll also be giving away a Sony Zv1 camera to one lucky participant.

The Alexia Foundation has published a new book, The Alexia: 30 Years, featuring the work of many winners of this prestigious documentary photography grant. The cover photo is by Katie Orlinsky, the 2019 Alexia grant winner.

The book is available through the Syracuse University bookstore.

Brendan Hoffman traveled through Tibet, India, and Pakistan for this latest feature in National Geographic Magazine on the Indus River, a lifeline for hundreds of millions of people that is threatened by climate change, geopolitics, and population growth.

Melting ice is crucial to the thirsty Indus River region. But now the flow is projected to decline, posing risks for agriculture and a growing population.
