Just a little still life from #kingscote of some #delft #ceramics on the sideboard. #sothebysinstitute #maafda #students had a great tour of the house with Paul Miller of #newportmansions The #house is chock full of #objects (and this after they have cleared most of them out) and documents the influence of the #china trade on #American collections and the aesthetics of the 19th century. Originally constructed in 1839 for George Noble Jones, the house was eventually sold to the King family and enlarged by McKim, Meade, and White under the direction of David King in 1876. #newport #rhodeisland #architecture #pottery

#amazing John Prip #coffee #pot at the RISD museum. I love the integration of art and design in this gallery and my #SIA #maafda #students appreciated the dialogue between the fine art (everything from Sheeler to Pollock to Raymond Pettibon) and the objects. It's a very well curated space that is visually appealing and informative. #siaabroad #design #silver #rhodeisland

The Phillips Family Needlework Picture - Price Estimate: $800000 - $1200000

Skinner's upcoming auction is one of the strongest I can remember in a long time. Of course there is this piece, but also a Paul Revere Boston Massacre print, not to mention a bottle of wine imported by George Washington in 1792, and rebottled in the 19th century.

The Phillips Family Needlework Picture, Sarah Phillips (b. Rowley, Massachusetts, 1656), Boston, Massachusetts, c. 1670, worked in red, blue, yel

Greetings from Charleston, SC. We're here through the end of the week, and look forward to posting pictures, essays, and details of the trip. Also, Jonathan Clancy and the Stickley Museum recently held the 3rd annual emerging scholars symposium at Craftsman Farms, and it was the best group we've had yet. Stay tuned for more posts, more details, and more photos.

Jonathan Clancy is indeed "one critic," and yes, he did use the term revolting. He did, however, make the larger point that the objectification of the female form was present in all of the works, and that if we were to be upset about something, we might start there rather than the weight of the subjects. Apparently the author wanted flashy and not nuance? Ah well...

Wendell Garrett (1929-2012) - From the editor's desk - The Magazine Antiques

The American Fine and Decorative Arts Program has lost a dear friend and mentor. Wendell Garrett was a friend to the program, a scholar, a gentleman, and a phenomenal conversationalist... witty, funny, and smart. We will miss you Wendell but are lucky to have known you and experienced your generosity.

We are an extended family here at Antiques and we are mourning our most valued member--the man who gave Americana its voice and our office its warmth. There will be a celebration of Wendell's life at the Winter Antiques Show in January (and in our January/February 2013 issue). It will be a joyful oc...
