Today, on April 6th, EPIC Players had planned on hosting our Songs from the Spectrum cabaret at Lincoln Center, in honor of Autism Acceptance Month.

Because of the unexpected crisis that we are all living through together, we were unable to host this event.

However, we made something for you.

Even though we had to postpone this year, we have continued to work and rehearse tirelessly with our amazing music team (led by the incredible and kind Scott Evan Davis ) to bring some of our cabaret to you, virtually.

In honor of Autism Acceptance Month and to highlight the continuing work of our teaching artists and participants, throughout April we will be releasing a selection of videos for you - our supporters - from what would have been our spring cabaret.

Please enjoy our first neuro-inclusive performance, put together with love and care, in their homes, by our EPIC Players, to you.

Unstuck Explores One Woman’s Journey with OCD

There's only 3 more chances to see Olivia Levine's solo-show #UNSTUCK The Tank! Manhattan with a Twist just gave the production a rave review!
“The powerful solo performance explores what it’s like growing up with OCD and how it has affected just about every facet of Levine’s life, including her queer identity...Though her story was a little tough to hear at times, it left me with a feeling of hope regarding how we navigate mental illness in our society. Her performance and story is personal, brave, funny, and really touching.” - Manhattan with a Twist

OCD (Paraphrased from the Web)
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder is an anxiety disorder characterized by uncontrollable thoughts and ritualized, repetitive behaviors. If you have OCD, you probably realize that your compulsions are irrational—but even so, you are unable to resist.

BACKGROUND
Like most of us, I’ve known a number of people who, in retrospect, I now realize were affected by OCD. I have to confess, I’m no longer a kid, and a good part of my life had already gone by before it was even recognized as a disorder. Back in the day, compulsive behavior was misunderstood and ridiculed. This wasn’t always done openly. Most often, in my immediate cohort, anyway, it was done quietly, behind the sufferer’s back. It was caused by ignorance, not malice. But, that’s no excuse. I’m extremely happy that we now understand OCD as a medical disorder, just as I’m happy that being gay, the other major element in Ms. Levine’s presentation, is now recognized as a natural condition.

THE PERFORMANCE
Olivia Levine’s fascinating take on OCD, as it affected her life as a lesbian, was more like stand-up comedy than a play. This is not a criticism. She is quite talented and very experienced in that regard, and her presentation was intelligent and extremely informative as well as being funny. We all learned a great deal as she spoke about growing up while having to repeat everything three times and not knowing why, and that was one of the smaller difficulties she mentioned.

Her offering was a delight, repleat with humor and affection as she described what must have been a very difficult childhood. From what she says, it seems her condition was not diagnosed properly until recently. It wasn’t until she was an adult, in college, that she began to ask the questions that finally led to successful treatment.

Growing up gay is, of course, another subject entirely. Coming out stories are all over the place these days, and they’ve begin to sound a lot alike. I’m happy to say that's not the case this time. The addition of the OCD element made the narrative fresh and entertaining, and I did learn something very significant. As a queer man, who grew up in the 50s, who thought of himself as a criminal until he was twenty-two years old, I couldn’t get over how much we have in common; the hiding, the lying, the yearning for impossible relationships, the entirely inappropriate heterosexual expectations forced upon us until we are finally able, with great disruption and difficulty, to break free.

Lesbians and queer men are almost always lumped together in our culture, but we are not the same. Male and female paradigms differ in any number of ways, regardless of sexual preference. Ms. Levine and I grew up in very different times, but she has made it clear that we were both surrounded by exactly the same sort of stupidity and ignorance, and she suffered the same way I did. Growing up as an outlier is just as fraught with pain as it has always been. In spite of the acceptance we think we have achieved, we need to remember that as we move forward. For making that clear, Ms. Levine deserves a VERY HAPPY FACE.
