(Day 19 of 30)
.
.

Marcus traces back much of his blistering creative talent to his childhood in Chicago. A keen athlete, he would go on to become one of the most in-demand sports photographers working today.
His early love of coloring books shaped his confident use of light and distinctive color palette. And as a nine-year-old, he would hire his drawing skills out to his less-talented classmates, an early example of his hustle. Marcus studied Business Economics, and it was in college he first became interested in photography, shooting his musician friends. On graduating, he followed his creative instincts, albeit with a savvy sense of supply and demand from his studies.

He describes himself as a chameleon, able to adapt his style to both an intimate one-on-one shoot and a full-scale ad production. He likes to over-prepare in advance, but on set he is reactive, finding the real and the stripped-back shot in even staged scenarios. Shooting local high school sports teams, he developed a raw, authentic look which stood out from the comic-book superhero style that was then in fashion. He was ahead of the curve, and has gone on to shoot superstars like Serena Williams, LeBron James and Kobe Bryant’s end-of-an-era retirement campaign for Nike.

Other clients include Abercrombie & Fitch, Adidas, Asics, BEATS by DRE, Bose, ESPN, Gillette, GQ, IKEA, Nike, The North Face, Pepsi, Powerade, Puma, and Reebok.

We bring you Photographer Darrel Hunter aka Modehunter @modehunter @darrelhunterphotography
.
.

Darrel Hunter’s eye for detail and creative outlook sets him apart in the photography world. Dedicated to the art his entire life, Hunter has been pursuing photography as a full-time career for several years. Although he’s completed professional training and courses, Hunter considers the countless hours he’s spent assisting and directing shoots to be more beneficial in helping him grow into the photographer he is today.

An avid traveler, his globetrotting is often inspiration for his work. From shooting look books in the deserts of Palm Springs to sidecars in Havana or top models at international fashion weeks, Hunter’s photography takes him to the far corners of the world. Whether it be New York, London or elsewhere, Hunter is constantly on the move, camera in hand, creating the perfect melange of elements in his photos.

Originally, Hunter got his start in fashion photography, but beyond this, he loves to shoot panoramic landscapes and portraits. His talent lies in translating his stylish, nuanced aesthetic born from his fashion shots to many other genres. Using unique angles and unconventional subjects, Hunter’s photography style is reflective of his personality: deep, soulful and expressive. He always seems to find the right light.

When Hunter’s not shooting, you can find him gathering inspiration in other ways: through international cuisine, perusing art and cultural exhibitions, enjoying live music and spending time with friends and family. His work has been featured in popular publications such as The Points Guy, Esquire and Net-a-Porter.

Nicky Quamina-Woo is a Black + Polynesian visual researcher who divides her time between Southeast Asia, the African continent and New York City. Her fascination with the tenacity of the human spirit deeply influences her approach to image-making. While initially studying psychology in university, she realized her true interests lay in celebrating the nuances of the human story rather than in just parsing them.
Woo's documentary work explores the transmogrified effects of trauma within communities. Specifically, the ways in which collective suffering and its myriad embers can change the underlying ethos of groups to form something new; Adaptation not only as a means of survival but morphology that integrates and syncretizes with culture. Nicky’s desire to examine these shifts is intrinsically linked to her ethnic heritage, whose parallels inspire her to dig deeper in search of human fortitude, compassion and healing.
Nicky Woo was the recipient of the Nikon sponsored Marilyn Stafford FotoReportage Award in 2020 as well as an awardee of the inaugural Reuters Storytelling grant for her work on a Tanzania based project about the intersection of western medicine and witchcraft. In her time as an independent, her clients have included CNN, The Washington Post, Human Rights Watch, Der Spiegel, BuzzFeed, Apple, Reporters Beyond Borders, The Guardian, Vogue Italia and Marie Claire magazines.
