The display and lighting of the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree is a quintessential New York experience—for locals and tourists alike. But its history makes it even more interesting. According to the Rockefeller Center, in December of 1931, workers of the center pooled their funds to purchase a tree. The original 20-foot-tall balsam fir tree was decorated by the men with garlands designed by their own families. In 1933, Rockefeller Center held its first Christmas Tree lighting ceremony and solidified the event as an annual tradition. This year marks the 88th Rockefeller Christmas Tree. It is on display through January 2021. Happy Holidays! Photographs: Rockefeller Center
