SCIQ on TYT

SCIQ on TYT We make edu-tainment videos that sit at the intersection of science and policy. We use humor as a scalpel. 'Cause we can.
(14)

In ScIQ, neuroscientist Jayde Lovell takes a look at issues in the news and puts them under the microscope, to break down what’s actually scientifically true and not true. Whether it’s politics, pop culture, or pseudoscience - Jayde wades through the mass of data and information, so you don't have to. Armed with her erstwhile co-host Bec Susan Gill, and a troupe of occasional performers – ScIQ takes a different approach to science communication – putting the fun back into science. Do vaccines really lead to autism? Is mental illness linked to gun control? Does the G-Spot actually exist? Should we really label GMOs? Did climate change lead to the formation of ISIS? There’s a lot of people out there who have an opinion on this stuff – but then, there's the weight of scientific evidence. I didn't think it was possible, but something good came out of the recent Gov Shutdown. A herd of Elephant Seals have moved onto a beach due to the lack of people and rangers! Free from people, they made it their own and now have 35 pups!

This beach was closed during the gov't shutdown, so a colony of seals moved in and took over

How Trump is Bribing Big Ag & Costing Americans

The Farm Bill was created during the Great Depression to help struggling farmers. But now the industry is dominated by big farming corporations – are farming handouts anymore than just a bribe to Big Ag? Jayde Lovell from ScIQ on TYT gives the lowdown.

See, the thing about global warming is

Yesterday Trump tweeted about 'global warming'.
Today Jayde Lovell would like to explain some science to him.
What about you - have you got anything you'd like to 'splainin to our Great Leader?

01/15/2019

Thousands of scientists are still at home today, thanks to the Trump Shutdown. The EPA, NASA and National Science Foundation (NSF) have stopped processing grant applications, cut off access to research data, and closed labs.
Some data will be lost forever... for example, annual surveys of fisheries and wildlife have been cancelled, leaving permanent holes in the data. Billion-dollar spacecraft are flying past planets around without completing any observations. Early-warning system for earthquakes are offline as geoscience observatories close. International projects - like the next IPCC report - are being written without US input.
The US Government shutdown is going to leave a permanent scar in American science.

America Adapts - The Climate Change Podcast

Start 2019 right!! #climatechange #policy

Not a single adaptation policy. Getting the public to think more about adapting to climate change has the potential to broaden the appeal of mitigating carbon emissions.

Mitigation through adaptation. It’s where we’re headed. Let’s start now.

12/31/2018

Hey guys! I've been watching the US Government shutdown keenly from my home in Australia. Many of you may not know this, but the ScIQ team are mainly non-US Citizens (Australian & Indonesian) who just really care about US politics and science! Now that the State Department is largely shut down, many of our team who are overseas for Christmas may not be able to get their visas processed to return to the US. That puts a massive spanner in our ability to make ScIQ episodes; but then again, Trump has never loved science or journalism, so I can't imagine he'd be too upset by this!

But this Shutdown doesn't only affect foreigners overseas; US Citizens outside America are also suffering. For example, the State Department told Americans trapped by the tsunami in Indonesia to follow the Twitter account of the U.S. Embassy in Jakarta. But the US Embassy had CLOSED it's Twitter account because of the shutdown - leaving US Citizens with nowhere to go.

I wanted to post this update, so our ScIQ community are aware how the Trump Shutdown is being felt around the world. - Jayde

Why TYT Cares About Stem Cell Research

#TBT - TYT's Praveen Singh, talking with Cenk Uygur & Jayde Lovell about how #stemcellresearch is helping to understand & treat her rare heart condition.
WATCH: https://bit.ly/2V309V1

Backstory: At age 31, The Young Turks' Praveen Singh unexpectedly passed out at work. After a trip to the emergency room and multiple subsequent tests, she was told her episode had been caused by an irregular heart beat associated with a condition called "ventricular tachycardia." Since that day, she has been pursuing answers to many unanswered questions about her condition, which let to a the formation of a world-leading team of scientists conducting stem cell research on her condition. This groundbreaking research has the potential to solve pieces of the puzzle in the cause and prevention of sudden cardiac arrest.
