Pulpit Fiction

Pulpit Fiction Actual iTunes review: "Good discussion. Two laid back guys who talk intelligently about Scripture." The episodes are usually around an hour.

With a touch of humor, and deeply rooted in modern scholarship, Pastors Eric and Robb reflect on readings from the lectionary. A new podcast is released every Sunday at www.pulpitfiction.com. There are also monthly Thursday Night Special episodes, in which we interview authors, activists, and leaders on the cutting edge of culture and theology.

We pray for our clergy colleagues. God be with you as your proclaim the Good News. In Christ, Robb and Eric

(Image is blue background with the words: For the next two Sundays, the Revised Common Lectionary will have churches share a story of Jesus proclaiming a word of justice, grace, and inclusion. He is met with anger and violence. Perhaps beloved, you were called for such a time as this. We hold you in our prayers.)

Rev. Dr. Dietra Wise was a classmate of Eric and Robb at Eden Theological Seminary. She is co-hosting this zoom event. I just found it, an hour late for the Thursday meeting, but there is still time for the Friday zoom call.

Here is a story about the UMC General Conference with some insight from your “Marvelous Methodist.”

On Thursday, church leaders voted 523 to 161 to eliminate language saying "the practice of homosexuality … is incompatible with Christian teaching.”

Today at the UMC General Conference, 50 years of discriminatory language has been lifted from the Book of Discipine.

Add a little bit of Maundy Thursday, stir in a little Pentecost and you get the fifth Sunday of Easter. We are reminded of Jesus' new commandment from John 15 and then we move to the gift of the Holy Spirit to the Gentiles in Acts 10:44-48. No VITW, but there are show notes on 1 John 5:1-6

This is a special episode for United Methodist General Conference, which started on April 23 and will last through May 3. This is the highest governing body of the UMC, and it has not convened since 2019. This is a discussion with five United Methodists who have been working for a more inclusive church since the disaster of 2019.

Robb McCoy is not a delegate of General Conference, but he has friends that are. A few moments after the first day of General Conference ended in Charlotte, five friends got together to talk about what is happening, what has led us to this point, and where we hope to go from here.

The General Conference of the United Methodist Church is about to begin. This is the first gathering of the highest governing body of the UMC since 2019. It promises to be a momentous gathering. Tonight Robb has arranged a round-table discussion with four delegates who are in Charlotte for the conference. We will produce a special podcast tonight and release it as soon as possible. We hope to produce at least one more special episode during or after Gen Con. If you have any questions you would like to know about this 10-day event, please share in the comments.

The final "I am" saying, "I am the true vine." We discuss the pruning of a healthy vine as well as the true meaning of what gets "burned away." Then we move into an important story for those working for a more inclusive church. The Ethiopian Eu**ch is "other" in so many ways, but nothing keeps him from being baptized and included in the Kingdom.
