Check out this crazy, dancey, brassy thing we made over the summer!

We are thrilled to announce the premiere of our "Terminus" music video on Big Takeover Magazine!
"The band put on a dazzling auditory and visual display in the video, dressed in post-apocalyptic gear and marching into the wastelands...'Terminus,' the song and video, is bright and upbeat and offers up hope (unity and community) in a world that’s slowly sliding into dystopia."

Funkrust Brass Band's song and video cycle BONES AND BURNING

We have a new project in the works!

The name of the film is TERMINUS, and it will be part of a music video cycle for the Brooklyn-based glam-punk Funkrust Brass Band. We're shooting in August (on 16mm!), and there's a crowdfunding campaign to help fund the videos, as well as an EP release.

Unsurprisingly, the campaign hit its goal within days of launching, but with SEVEN DAYS TO GO we could still really use all the support we can get. The stretch goals will allow us additional production support, and maybe even pay our crew.

Thanks for taking a look. Can't wait to share this one with you all!

Energeia Films was the US Production company for Fonotune - An Electric Fairytale and we're thrilled people will finally get a chance to see it. Hoping for a US premiere soon! 2019 seems to be the year 💪🎥

In May we're screening Fonotune - An Electric Fairytale. (Dir. Fint, Germany/Japan, 2018, 75mins. Starring Kiki Sukezane, Kazushi Watanabe) - as if Andy Warhol had directed a Japanese Mad Max.

The end of the world is nigh and legendary rocker Guitar Wolf Seiji is due to play at the last ever concert. A group of drifters sets out to witness the performance – they journey far, the radio they listen to is far-out… Fonotune is unexpected art for your eyes and ears. This Japanese delicacy is a visual and audio feast – as if Daft Punk had been force-fed THX 1138

See it in May at the festival.

CAMPAIGN UPDATE #6
ATTRACT MODE: THE HARSH REALITY SCREENPLAY

Friends and peers, because we're asking you all for your support with this project, it seems only fair that you know as much as possible about what you're being asked to back, but since we haven't shot a lot of the film yet, we can only share so much!

That being said, the screenplay is in a very good place at the moment (and will continue to evolve in the days and weeks leading up to production), and so we're very excited to share with you a scene from HARSH REALITY!

You can view the scene at our campaign page, and if you like what you see (and haven't already) please consider making a contribution to our film fund!

The HARSH REALITY team is excited to announce the addition of the multi-talented, supremely badass Heather Buckley as our Assistant Director! Heather has been a part of some of indie-genre’s most exciting films as of late, including Ted Geoghegan's We Are Still Here and Jen Wexler's upcoming feature debut THE RANGER for Larry Fessenden's Glass Eye Pix.

When not working on feature films, Heather is the Blu-ray special features producer for Red Shirt Pictures, Vestron Video Collector's Series, and Severin Films, and has contributed to documentaries and supplements for THE THING, the HELLRAISER Scarlet Box Trilogy, RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD, the SAW 10th Anniversary reissue, and ARMY OF DARKNESS, among others.

Heather is everything we want in an AD: she’s professional, attentive to detail, and holds a strict no-bullsh*t policy when it comes to filmmaking (and filmmakers). There’s no one else we’d rather have in charge of our set!

INFLUENCES #2: THE TWILIGHT ZONE

The Twilight Zone was a staple in my house growing up. Both of my parents had fond memories of the show, but, in particular, my mom was a huge fan. Prior to an airing, she would remind my brother and I about her all-time favorite episode, in which a group of people find themselves inexplicably trapped in a shapeless/unidentifiable room, with no memory of how they got there. Every time an episode would start, however, it failed to be the one that she remembered so well and, sadly, I don’t think we ever actually got the chance to watch it together.

Years later when I finally caught the episode, I would learn it was called “Five Characters in Search of an Exit,” and, despite having the ending regaled to me numerous times, none of the impact was lost on me. This is (and remains) the power of The Twilight Zone. In its simple, but still grand, ideas, The Twilight Zone asked big questions of what it meant to be human. Nearly everyone has one episode that they’ll never forget. Whether it was watching “The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street” in elementary school, watching Henry Bemis break his glasses for the first time in “Time Enough at Last,” or any number of events throughout the show’s 5-year run, The Twilight Zone is a staple of science-fiction.

Although perhaps, now, Black Mirror serves as a more current point of reference for many instances of speculative and science-fiction, when Iain first asked me to produce Harsh Reality, it was Twilight Zone that first came to mind. In many ways, Harsh Reality’s script plays out like an episode of the show, and this is what made me excited to proceed further on the project. Since that moment the script has evolved (and continues) to as the project is taking shape, but Twilight Zone has remained in the back of both of our minds. Thank you Rod Serling.

In the comments, let us know what your favorite episodes of Twilight Zone are, and why?

INFLUENCES #1: ROBOCOP

First off, I want to say thank you to everyone who's backed the film so far. Your support means the world to us! I've spent the past few days wracking my brain for ways to stay in touch, and thought that maybe I could use this platform to give you a better idea of where HARSH REALITY came from.

If you know me you probably know that the films of Paul Verhoeven have been a huge influence, particularly his American work (and I do love his Dutch oeuvre, but in a different way).

While it's not my favorite PV film (that would be TOTAL RECALL), ROBOCOP has probably had the biggest impact. When I was a kid, maybe 9 or 10, we'd somehow ended up with a VHS copy taped off cable or dubbed from my uncle's collection, and I remember being equally enthralled and terrified by the film's worldview, covering my eyes (mostly) during the ED-209 unveiling and Murphy's horrible death just to get to the cool gunfights and slick robot action. At the time, I was young enough and fortunate enough to not have personally witnessed death or experienced extreme pain in real life, so ROBOCOP really drove home the fragility of the human body and the pain inflicted by violence. (Even on the bad guys. Nobody deserves what happened to Emil.)

As I got older, I started to see through the film's shiny exterior, to its heart of wickedly smart, biting satire. The deeper I looked, the more detailed the story became, and I realized that all these disparate elements -- the newsbreaks, the fake commercials, the police strike and the corporate machinations over Delta City combined to create a massive and complex off-screen world. More than that, the characters lives and desires are intricately and deftly intertwined.

I'm not saying that HARSH REALITY will be a fraction of the film that ROBOCOP is, but after the dozens of viewings since that first dubbed VHS copy, I think it's taught me something about character intentions, world-building, and not taking things at face value (particularly capitalism). I hope these are qualities that I can bring to our film.

xx Iain
