🗣Listen up y’all❗️Whether it’s Friendsgiving, Tapasgiving, Thanksgiving, or whatever else you’re bound to celebrate in the coming weeks, you need to add some Albariño from Rias Biaxas to the mix.
🥘 I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, white wines with an acidic backbone are your friends when it comes to holiday meals. And Albariño absolutely fits that profile. The last thing I want is a full-throttled, high-alcohol wine with all of the other stuff that’s going on.
🇪🇸The spiritual home of Albariño is in the region of Galicia, in northwest Spain not far from the Atlantic Ocean. Specifically, the area within Galicia that grows Albarino is Rias Baixas. The influence of the Atlantic Ocean, creates a maritime climate — moderate temperatures, mist, and cool nights to help lock in that high acidity. But the region also gets 2,200 hours of sunshine which ensures that grapes are able to fully ripen.
The wines are known for their acidity and can meld with a number of things on the table. But Albariño is no one trick pony. Different microclimates as well as winemaking techniques yield wines that are crisp and linear to
rounder and softer styles as well as wines that can be fruity to those that are less fruity and more earthy. In other words, there’s something for everyone.

This Bordeaux Blanc hails from the Entre-Deux-Mers sub-region of Bordeaux, which sits between the Left Bank and the Right Bank and between the Garonne and Dordogne Rivers.
🍷
Château Roquefort 2019 Bordeaux Blanc (Bordeaux, France) $13.99
🍷
There is a slew of producers from Bordeaux who are committing to sustainability standards, in an area that is not necessarily known for that historically due to the marginal maritime climate, which can breed disease or rot that might need treatments/spraying. Hopefully these producers will help usher the region to more environmentally friendly practices.
🍷
At Château ROQUEFORT only 45% of the estate is planted to vines and the grapes are farmed organically. The rest is forest, woods, and fields, which encourages biodiversity.
🍷
In this bottle, we have a Bordeaux Blanc made from 85% Sauvignon Blanc and 15% Sémillon. This is a perfect, high acid daily drinker, and at a fantastic price. Another cool fact: they use lighter weight glass bottles to reduce their carbon footprint.
🍷
Thanks to Gregory + Vine for the sampling opportunity!

New Blog Post! Goodbye Sauvignon Blanc, Hello Albariño. Even Zoe (see pic) is excited about this one.
🍾
Sauvignon Blanc, I love you. You were there when I needed a break from Chardonnay. You were there when I wanted a crisp, clean, high acid white. Thank you. Thank you for being a constant in my life. But Sauvignon Blanc, I need a break. It’s not you, it’s me. You have been lovely. I just need something different. I know that the grass isn’t always greener on the other side, but I need to see for myself. I promise I’ll be back. We can frolic in the meadow like we used to do. But for now, I need to see what else is out there.
🍾
Why hello Albariño. You exciting little thing...

If you think kosher wines are just for Jewish holidays, think again. Really great wines coming out of Israel, with young winemakers putting their passion and expertise forward, and reviving an ancient wine culture, but with a different international spin. Check out these wines from Yarden in honor of the Jewish high holidays coming up, but they're also worthy of everyday drinking, great value and really delicious.

Looking forward to drinking these. Thanks to the good folks from Founders Brewing Co. for these. An interview with brewmaster Jeremy Kosmicki this Sunday night on the craft beer cast. Thanks Gregory + Vine for setting up the interview.
Today we virtually travel to the Rioja region of Spain. I have never been there, but oh how I’d love to visit. Last fall I participated in a month of Twitter chats featuring the wines of Bodegas LAN in the Rioja region. Many of these wines are widely available. Enjoy my tasting notes at this link.
