Some of my LinkedIn content performs much, much better than my average.

Every time the new LinkedIn Algorithm report drops, I have to re-wrestle with the question, “Why?”.

What’s the secret? How do I get my content to hit the most eyeballs 👀 on LinkedIn? Is it ...

🤔 Having more 🚶🏾‍♀️followers and connections?
🤨 Working my fingers overtime writing cold DMs? 😱
😧 Spending $$ on paid advertising? 🙈

No, no, no!

The current secret is to… […whispers ] “make LinkedIn content sharable!”

When content gets shared by someone else, it’s a strong signal to LinkedIn’s algorithm that the post is valuable.

In addition to the boost received from that person’s audience, the share itself triggers the LinkedIn algorithm to show that content to more second- and third-degree connections, and that – my friend – triggers exponential reach.

It also signals trust within the community of the person who shared – because we all know – we share cool, valuable, outstanding, and newsworthy content!

Regardless of what type of content you’re creating, I also want to share three great ways your current audience members can support you and your content:

🧨 Share, Send, and Save!

♻️ Sharing (aka Reposting): The most valuable type of share, this is when someone reposts your content with or without commentary to their own profile. It creates a new post that’s visible to their network and links back to your profile. This is how your content lands in front of fresh eyeballs! Suddenly you have a whole new audience and lifespan for your post.

⏩ Sending: This is when folks want to share your post directly with one other person (or a small group). It’s essentially like reposting but through DM’s.

🧷 Saving: Beyond sharing directly with others, saving a post is the ultimate signal of value. It tells LinkedIn that your content is worth revisiting, which the algorithm rewards with increased visibility.

🚫 What you want to avoid, is to “beg” for reposts or saves directly in the post itself. It might be viewed as engagement bait and can backfire by the algorithm and by the beg-ees [new word?].

🤔 What content of yours gets shared the most (or what type of content do you share the most)❓

"Before you can improvise, you need to be perfect on the piano"

That quote is often attributed to Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart although I’m sure he would have said it more eloquently and also added in profanity.

That brings me to my new passion for drawing (not the profanity, the learning to be perfect before you get to improvise).

Our teacher - Eric March of the Art Students League – is quite adamant that we see as closely to reality as possible and draw THAT.

In the exercise below we were only allowed four tones of gray to reproduce the photo.

Where are the near blacks, where are the near whites, where are the in between grays, and how do they play off each other?

Is the wall on the building to the right white? No, it’s not, but in relationship to the four other tonalities it is.

As a beginner drawer I’m not (yet) improvising. I’m learning how to take my teacher’s guidance and follow step by step, so I can learn how to look deeper and thus reproduce more faithfully.

Would I want to be a hyper realist painter down the road?

No – I wouldn’t have the patience for it, but I want to have a solid base in looking, seeing, and reproducing, so I CAN improvise.

Because:
➡️ Improvisation is based on deep, deep knowledge, not on fantasy ⬅️

Nowadays I mostly find myself improvising with LinkedIn content creation and strategy. I’ve been all-in on LinkedIn for so long (7 years at this point) that the most fun I have is playing with new forms and content mediums to see what gets me the best results.

If you are not yet ready to improvise your LinkedIn content strategy and want some guidance, hit me up! In the comments, in a DM, via email – just do it!

🤔 Where is your deep knowledge that allows you to improvise❓

I’m all in favor of working WITH the LinkedIn Algorithm, but never “for” it.

And I’m also all for focusing on great content and consistent posting first and believe that everything else will fall in place thereafter including the algorithm.

So, when I read about “consumption rate vs. dwell time” stats on LinkedIn (see Richard v d Blom’s Algo report), my eyes start to focus on something in the far-off distance, and my brain goes foggy (England fog).

And yet.

Here I am telling you about dwell time and consumption rate – BECAUSE it feeds the “great content and consistent posting first” belief.

Until recently, dwell time (how long people engage with your content) has been “ze” LinkedIn metric.

If you wanted to have massive dwell time, so the algorithm would share your content with more eyeballs, you would put out a long video or a 100-slide carousel, great content be damned. Because – even if people didn’t make it past slide 14 – they had spent looking at those 14 slides and stayed with your content.

But this year, LinkedIn is shifting their focus to consumption rate.

I know, I know, bear with me:

Consumption rate is the percentage of your post that’s being consumed by your audience.

So having a 10-slide deck that people finish flipping through has more value than a 100-slide deck that people get 20-slides into.

Same with video: 3 minutes watched of a 9-minute video is less valuable than finishing a 1-minut video. The latter is a 100% consumption rate, the prior is 33% consumption rate.

😆 🤣 NOW you understand what I’m taking about, when I mention brain fog, right?

What are examples of good content for consumption rate, you ask?

🎥 Videos under 2 minutes: All you need is a good hook, concise content, and compelling call-to-action
🎠 Carousels of 5-10 slides: Give it context in the post and a visual to allows for quick intake
📚Text posts with clear breaks (sic!). Nina Note: A touch of light-heartedness goes a long way!
🙋🏻‍♀️ Polls: They are fast to engage with and if your audience engages, you got 100% consumption rate written all over it! 💥

🤔 Do you create content for dwell time or consumption rate, or neither❓
⤵️ Hit the comments below and share your thoughts! 💬

And talking of consuming stuff:

I run a LinkedIn Engagement Group – it’s a membership – think of it as an instant LinkedIn Fan Club with a LinkedIn Mastermind built in. It’s pretty cool.

This kind of advice and guidance is what keeps our members renewing quarter after quarter and it makes sure that they get the best engagement bang for posting buck.

I always wanted to be able to sketch at hoc.

A quick likeness of a person on a bench across from me in the park. A beautiful moment of nature captured with a few strokes of a brush or a pencil. A tree, a flower, a patch of moss.

There are several sketchbooks scattered around my house, bearing evidence of past attempts.

Attempts – nothing more.

And then, a few months ago, it clicked: Right time, right place (in this case, right website).

Long story short – for the past 3 months, I’ve been taking drawing classes with March through the Art Students League.

I now know so much more, and the more I learn, the further away my goals seem to move. But in the best way possible.

I can now draw things I wasn’t able to before. It just takes me for freaking ever.

But the “freaking ever” is the best part.

In a world that is unhinged (putting it mildly), the total focus on an object to draw is such a relief.

There’s the pencil, erasers (yes, plural), the paper, a model, and you.

For hours.

There are moments where you are on top of the world, and the next 5 minutes, you’re in despair, only to be on top of the world again a bit further down the road.

Making art is all about problem-solving and focus.

I still love going for long walks and photographing nature to soothe my parasympathetic nervous system, but the drawing is next level.

It reminds me a bit of swing dancing where you’re 100% focused on the music, the movement, and following (in my case) your partner’s cues for the next move—total immersion and so sorely needed in today’s world.

🤔 What is your way of restoring yourself from stress ❓

The image assembly below is a progression of drawing a few leaves 🍃 – so simple, not easy – and so much more room for improvement 🧐 – thankfully.

I love talking to strangers.

There are places where I insist that you are fare game to be talked to – whether you like it or not. If you’re at a bar with me, be prepared – you will be talked to. Grocery check-out line – same.

Maybe it’s because I work from home and I’m starved for IRL interaction, maybe it’s because I love hearing stories, and it’s definitely because I love sharing stories.

So, I tried that concept on LinkedIn.

I started hanging out at the LinkedIn bar, you know, the feed, and started talking to strangers.

How did that go, you wonder?

Well – it’s a mixed bag.

Maybe it’s because there was no prosecco 🥂 involved, and maybe because there was no time and place synchronicity, it just wasn’t the same.

What didn’t work for strangers, worked super well for coolish leads, old friends and co-workers, former clients. Looking them up and engaging was so much fun and also re-engaged some cold leads into hot ones. 🔥

The system is super easy as it’s effective.

Every day I give myself extra 15 minutes to look up and engage with:
a) A former client
b) A warm lead from my CRM
c) An acquaintance of any kind

I look at their post, comment if appropriate, or endorse them if there’s no post.

AND – since LinkedIn is my “thing” – I have the opportunity to leave a DM asking them about their LI practice or challenges. ⬅️ (That, by the way, is Nina speak for “I’m giving them unsolicited feedback on their LinkedIn practices.)

It’s been fun and it’s been effective.

Sometimes it’s the little things that lead to big things and as always: Consistency pays off.
I’m a huge fan of consistency… just saying…

And, talking of Consistency: I run a LinkedIn Engagement Group – it’s a membership – think of it as an instant LinkedIn Fan Club with a LinkedIn Mastermind built in. It’s pretty cool.

This kind of tinkering and experimenting is what keeps our members renewing quarter after quarter and it keeps the conversation around attracting clients into our businesses fresh and fun.

Write “Fan Club” in the comments if you want to find out more.

🤔 When’s the last time you “browsed” LinkedIn at leisure and looked up “randos”❓

If you follow me regularly (as you totally should), you know I love to give my LinkedIn Profile a visual makeover every once in a while.

Last year, I did a major profile overhaul and documented the process in a three-part video series during an entire overhaul of my profile.

The video below covers the ‘visual assets’ section of the makeover. Specifically, I talk through the inspirations for my new (now old) banner image and what I took into consideration when re-creating my own.

➡️ Have a look at my profile after watching the video and let me know in the comments what you think of my current banner (different from the one in the video). 🧐

Time to clean out the old, and in with the new!
Although in this case, the video below is over a year old (ancient in today’s world), but it’s still relevant.

A bit over a year ago I decided to give my LinkedIn Profile a big makeover. I went through Everything; messaging, visuals, writing, testimonials: THE WORKS.

So, Robin Friend Stift and I had the idea to make it a “thing” and create videos along the way so that you, dear reader, could benefit from my experience.

This, first video, talks about what needs to happen and why.

The second video addressed the visuals - my favorite part and the hardest to get just right.

The third video deals with text changes and messaging.

The visuals have since changed – well – more than some change their socks 🧦 – but what can I say – it’s fun (to me at least) to play dress up every once in a while and change the banner.

🤔 On a scale of 1 – 10, how happy are you with your LinkedIn Profile and why❓

It’s been a long time coming: We updated our website home page!

The changes aren’t major, but there are a few new assets and content nuggets I’m particularly fond of:

1️⃣ We updated, and I re-recorded our ‘Hero Video’ which you can watch below✺. Having a homepage video that quickly introduces what we do for whom and why is invaluable. It also builds that first connection!

2️⃣ The ‘Get More Out of Your LinkedIn Efforts’ section (below the first Testimonial section). Long-time followers might also recognize the shiny new Clock Wise “Conversion Cycle” graphic. We use the same core visual for the video marketing cycle, and I’m thrilled it’s working as well for the LinkedIn Conversion cycle.

3️⃣ The ‘Our Offerings’ section at the bottom of the page. Getting this three-column section on the homepage was a major part of why we wanted to do the remodel in the first place.

Is the homepage ‘done’?

No of course not, all of you reading this probably know that a website is never finished. It’s a living, breathing thing and I gave up on getting it ‘perfect’ a long time ago. 😜

I am very pleased with the updates though.

👉🏼 Whether you’re a new or long-time follower I’d appreciate you taking a look and letting me know if you find the new layout clear and compelling.

🤔 How badly does your website homepage need a touch up❓
