Rabbinical Assembly

Rabbinical Assembly Founded in 1901, the Rabbinical Assembly is the international association of Conservative rabbis. Its membership spans over 20 countries and numbers 1600 rabbis.
(36)

The Rabbinical Assembly has been the creative force shaping the ideology, programs, and practices of the Conservative movement, and is committed to building and strengthening the totality of Jewish life. The Assembly publishes learned texts, prayerbooks, and works of Jewish interest; and it administers the work of the Committee on Jewish Law and Standards for the Conservative movement. It also serves the professional and personal needs of its membership through publications, conferences, and benefit programs, and it coordinates the Joint Placement Commission of the Conservative movement. Rabbis of the Assembly serve congregations throughout the world, and also work as educators, officers of communal service organizations, and college, hospital, and military chaplains.

As Jews, we believe democracy is strongest when everyone participates – and it suffers when citizens are shut out from the democratic process or choose not to engage. The 2020 Civic Engagement Campaign encourages all U.S. citizens to exercise their right to vote and to break down obstacles that shut some out of the voting booth.

Voices for Change | Cantors Assembly

In an effort to promote peace through harmony, more than 100 faith leaders came together to produce an interfaith, multiracial virtual video that unites the voices of Black and Jewish prayer leaders from around the world.

The Cantors Assembly came up with the idea for the “Voices for Change” video as a way to build bridges among the Black and Jewish communities through music following the murder of George Floyd by police violence in May.

John Lewis Bent the Arc

As we continue to mourn the death of Rep. John Lewis and celebrate his life, we, as rabbis, naturally do so, in part, through the prism of our tradition. The Rabbinical Assembly invited Rabbis Arnold Goodman and Neil Sandler, former senior rabbis of Ahavath Achim Synagogue, to share personal reflections on their experiences with Lewis. Goodman’s tenure included the first half of Rep. Lewis’ time in Congress; Sandler’s tenure coincided with the second half.

Ahavath Achim’s former senior rabbis remember the former congressman, sharing personal reflections on their experiences with him.

Civic engagement is a core American Jewish value – religious and civic. Yet, just as the COVID-19 pandemic has altered almost every aspect of the way we live and work, inevitably it will also impact how we vote this November. This webinar will focus on the efforts different Jewish religious denominations are taking to promote a strong democracy and election participation during COVID-19.

One Zoom employee saved High Holidays streaming for 300 synagogues

Mitch Tarica is Zoom's streaming platform’s director of North American sales. He’s also a member of Temple Ner Tamid, and he was critical in getting Zoom to make a small but vital tweak to its software that temporarily stopped it from automatically ending a meeting after 24 hours. Rabbinical Assembly member Rabbi Joshua Heller was directly involved in connecting with Tarica and moving this forward.

The change was crucial to enabling hundreds of synagogues to stream their services on Zoom without running afoul of Jewish laws barring the use of technology on Shabbat and Jewish holidays. For synagogues that requested it, Zoom temporarily allowed meetings to run as long as 72 hours, enabling synagogues to set up their stream prior to the start of Rosh Hashanah on Friday afternoon and have it run uninterrupted through Sunday night.

When Rosh Hashanah begins on Friday night, some 300 synagogues across North America streaming their High Holidays services via Zoom will be able to set it and forget it thanks largely to one man: Mitch Tarica. Tarica is the streaming platform’s director of North American sales. He’s also a membe...

Perspective | Jews can’t gather as usual for Rosh Hashanah — and stay safe from covid-19

"We’re a people that likes to be together to pray, to form community, to celebrate. And it’s very hard when we can’t be in physical proximity. [But] it would be especially tragic if religious experience led to the death of participants. Our most central religious value in Judaism is to preserve life.” -Rabbi Jacob Blumenthal, CEO, Rabbinical Assembly and The United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism
