Real life and halakhah intersect every day. What happens when a rabbi is preparing for his wedding and he wishes to acknowledge his adopted father on his ketubah? What are the implications of his learning on our understanding of families, relationships, and status within Jewish law? Modern families and modern interpretations of Jewish law come together in our engaging and relevant Adoption teshuvah by Rabbi Nate Crane.

Jewish organizational streams weigh in on Texas abortion law

Barring a woman from accessing an abortion not only blocks her right to choose, but also her religious freedoms.

Leaders of the Reform movement were quick to condemn the new law in a letter signed on Sept. 2 by multiple organizations, in which they noted the stringency of the new legislation.

Texas' abortion ban is against my religion. As a rabbi, I will defy it if necessary.

Rabbinical Assembly member Rabbi Danny Horwitz writes, "Judaism teaches that potential life is sacred. Nevertheless, our religion also teaches that potential life is not the same as actual life, that a fetus is not a human being."

(RNS) — Judaism teaches that potential life is sacred. Nevertheless, our religion also teaches that potential life is not the same as actual life, that a fetus is not a human being.

Last week The Times of Israel published reports of sexual abuse in USY and how they have been handled. In a statement published today, The United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism wrote: "The experiences reported absolutely do not reflect in any sense the values that we represent as a Jewish institution or as leaders and educators committed to the safety, dignity of and respect for every person, all the more so, participants in our programs." When I set up the pdf of weekday Shacharit from SSSFW (https://www.rabbinicalassembly.org/sites/default/files/2020-08/weekday%20shaharit%20Siddur%20Sim%20Shalom%20%281%29.pdf ) to be viewed in 2-Pages Mode (i.e., in Preview)--the two pages that are viewed are for different pages (i.e., the English side shows the earlier page and the Hebrew side shows the later page). I do not have the password to alter the PDF when I download it. Does anyone have: a) the password to edit this document--such that I can use this at my shiv'ah minyan--and/or b) a PDF edited so that the Hebrew and English sides properly align? Todah rabbah!
For those who joined in person this afternoon or virtually at any point for the minyanim I've been assembling for remembering my brother Rami of blessed memory--I want to thank you again for your presence and your generosity. It has been deeply meaningful to me to gather with you all through this period. There are still 4 more slots when I am anxious about making a minyan: Sunday July 4 @ 9:15 AM ET Monday July 5 @ 9:15 AM ET Tuesday July 6 @ 9:15 AM ET and Wednesday July 7 @ 9:15 AM ET. If you think you can attend any/all of these times, please leave a comment at https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1cdit6pTWFI7W_8ZBz5LbFVpoP_JOzb4fWFEa922XqV4/edit?usp=sharing . The rest of the upcoming times for Shiv'ah do not worry me as far as minyan-making goes, and I am grateful for the love you're all sharing in joining my family and me at this time.
May 23, 2021 This is an open letter to the leadership of every orthodox Jewish community especially, but the gist is pertinent for every sector of the Jewish world in the diaspora. The Israelis have learned how to take care of themselves, and unless you are willing to become fodder for Palestinian street toughs, as we were for the N***s, then it’s high time to organize for self- defense. In my day, we had the JDL, who made marauding youths understand that it doesn’t pay to attack even one Jew, because we are as the Three Musketeers said, “One for all, and all for one.” Before the famous incident in Crown heights with the Rebbe, the gangs of Brooklyn feared the Hassidim, because when one was attacked, frum youth had no fear, and would turn out in hundreds for any incidence of violence. Hashem did not place us Jews in his service to become fodder for evil anti -Semites. Avrahom, Moshe, Dovid, and Solomon were not “namby pamby” when it came to a physical confrontation. Let’s talk frankly, if certain members of our community are determined to dress in the manner of 16th century Polish noblemen, in order to establish a visual distinction, then they must be prepared to defend themselves against those forces who are determined to physically hurt them. The holocaust should have taught us a lesson, that Hashem wants us to add defensive procedures to our daily routine, in order to stay alive and serve His needs. In 1960, Lord Ozwald Mosley was still speaking his anti-semitic diatribe to the English community, accompanied by 50 or so, black shirted toughs. I was a teenager in Manchester, England, and when the word got out that he would be speaking in Moss Side, we Jewish youths turned out in force, and even though he was protected and surrounded by the police on horseback, we broke through the cordon, and pummeled the swine. It was his last speech to the public, because he knew what was in store for him and his henchmen if they tried to organize again in public. Rather than appoint one person to don the mantle of leadership, all of you must organize systematically to respond in force to any incident, and be prepared to physically confront any aggressors, whoever they are, and It must be a community effort. It would be a good idea to hire self-defense experts to train Jewish youths to defend themselves, in order to send a clear message to the world, “Never Again.” Respectfully submitted, Ian Kay [email protected]

Chaverim: Not being in my office, I do not have access to my library. Since Pesach commences on a Saturday night, how do we structure the effective times in the Agency Authorization to Sell Chametz and the Bill of Sale to a non-Jew? Bedikat chametz has to be done Thursday night, biur chametz by noon on Friday. But can a Jew retain chametz to eat on Shabbat? If so, until when, and how is any remainder disposed of before the beginning of the Seder?
