MY DAUGHTER’S LANDLORD SET HER UP TO KICK HER OUT OF THE HOUSE AND INCREASE RENT — WE SHOWED HIM HE MADE A MISTAKE.
My daughter, Lily, rented a modest house with a big backyard that was mostly dirt and concrete when she moved in. Despite the uninspiring landscape, Lily, an avid gardener, transformed it into a blooming oasis.
She signed a lease for one year, but after seven months of living there, she called me in tears last week.
HER: "Dad, my landlord...he learned I got a raise at work. He keeps talking about renovations and higher rent ever since."
ME: "But sweetie, why are you crying?"
HER: "After I gave no reaction to the rent increase, he SECRETLY threw some old, prohibited chemical containers into MY backyard and then accused me of violating the lease by storing hazardous materials on the property. He gave me 2 days to move out and is now going to show the house to other people."
