La Fête des Mères vs. Mother’s Day

#TRADITION Today is French Mother's Day. Joyeuse fête des mères à toutes les mamans françaises, francophones et francophiles ! ❤️

There are two to four weeks between Mother’s Day in the United States and France, the former taking place on the second Sunday in May and the latter on the last (or, like this year, on the first Sunday in June). But calendars aside, their totally distinct origins sum up just how different our two ...

The 177 French Soldiers of D-Day

#HISTORY Seventy-six years ago today, this small group of elite French soldiers landed with the Allies on #DDay.

The D-Day Landings on the Normandy beaches took place on June 6, 1944, led by 57,500 American soldiers, 58,815 Brits, 21,400 Canadians, and just 177 Frenchmen! A tiny but elite commando force the history books have long forgotten. “Action stations, 0430 hours, the last coffee before France. The ni...

#HOMAGE Private Warren Capers of Kenbridge, Virginia, aided over 330 wounded soldiers on #DDay, 76 years ago today, and was recommended for a Silver Star. A medic with the 320th Barrage Balloon Battalion, he was one of about 2,000 African-American soldiers who took part in the Normandy Landings on June 6, 1944. Yet, their contribution to the invasion has been largely left out of history books and popular films.

Perspective Through Exile: James Baldwin in France

#LITERATURE The killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis gave the words of James Baldwin a new resonance.

A key figure in the fight against discrimination and for civil rights in the United States, African-American novelist James Baldwin was born in Harlem in 1924. Fleeing racism in America, he arrived in Paris in 1948. France was where he wrote his most famous works, such as Notes of a Native Son (1955...

#NEWS A week after the killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis, the #BlackLivesMatter movement has spread to France, where protests took place in Paris, Lyon, Marseille, Lille, and Grenoble on Tuesday.

Anti-racism protesters chanted the names of George Floyd and Adama Traoré, a 24-year old black Frenchman who died in police custody in 2016, pinned to the ground by three officers in the Paris suburb of Beaumont-sur-Oise. His case has become a rallying cry against police brutality in France.

#NEWS Our June issue is here!

This month, visit the Marquis de Lafayette's "manor of both worlds" 🇫🇷🇺🇸 in the Auvergne and read our profile of Jean-Paul Goude, the French-American Pygmalion of fashion, who at almost 80 years old, is still going strong, mixing painting, drawing, and photography – a technique he baptized “French Correction” in the 1970s.

Finally, marvel at the talent of our readers who took part in our #FrenchArtChallenge and, confined at home, have recreated paintings by French masters using what they had on hand. The results surpassed our expectations!
