North Coast vintners are shifting more grape harvesting to machines

With the rise of of machines, HARVEST SEASON may have documented the end of an era in human (immigrant) labor in the California vineyards:

"Vineyard managers...[are] turning more toward machines to replace humans for various agricultural jobs given the dearth of available workers and the increasing costs to employ them."

'Harvest Season' airs on Monday, May 13, 2019, 10:00-11:30 PM ET (check local listings) on PBS’s Independent Lens | PBS. It will also be available simultaneously for online streaming at PBS.org. Then available on streaming platforms including Amazon Prime, Comcast, and iTunes beginning Tuesday, May 14, 2019.

FREE OUTDOOR SCREENING TONIGHT! Join us tonight - Sunday, May 5 - at 7:30 pm at the amphitheater at Civic Center Park in Palm Desert for #AmDocs #UnderTheStars. We are screening HARVEST SEASON (from 2-time Emmy nominated director Bernardo Ruiz & Quiet Pictures), an important look at the largely unseen but vital Latino workforce that keeps California’s Napa Valley wine country in business. While the Instagram version of Wine Country paints a picture of trendy and luxury hotels, Michelin-starred restaurants & elegant tasting rooms, Ruiz’s lens focuses on Napa’s new generation of Latino winemakers and the hard work going on behind the scenes. We see the dynamic Latino and immigrant workforce of mostly low-wage grafters, pruners, pickers, and cellar workers who go unnoticed by many in a high-stakes operation that simply could not function without them.

Bring a blanket or lawn chair and join us at Civic Center Park in Palm Desert this evening for some FREE family entertainment and a documentary film that just may inspire you. The night is part of Palm Desert First Weekend.

Palm Springs: On Sunday, May 5th at 7:30pm, American Documentary Film Festival and Film Fund presents a special free, outdoor screening of HARVEST SEASON. Catch it on the big screen a week before its broadcast premiere on PBS thanks to support from Latino Public Broadcasting!

How about some FREE family fun that’s also educational and community-oriented? On Saturday & Sunday, May 4 and 5 (at 7:30 pm), #AmDocs is proud to be part of the Palm Desert First Weekend events with outdoor evening film screenings at Civic Center Park. On May 4 at 7:30 pm, we’ll present 2 films - the short documentary OCEAN STORIES (directed by Greg Goggin & Patrick Creadon) and our 2019 Best International Feature Documentary award winning film DEFEND, CONSERVE, PROTECT (directed by Stephen Amis). These conservation-themed films focus on the ocean and activism, with the latter film focusing on eco-activists facing off against a Japanese whaling fleet in an epic battle to defend the majestic Minke whales of the Southern Ocean. On May 5 at 7:30 pm, we will present HARVEST SEASON (directed by 2-time Emmy-nominee Bernardo Ruiz at Quiet Pictures). This timely and moving portrait of the Mexican-American influence and legacy on California’s multi-billion dollar wine industry, probes deep inside the lives of temporary laborers, permanent residents, and multigenerational Latinos intimately connected to the production of premium wines in the Napa and Sonoma regions north of San Francisco. The public is invited free of charge to pack a blanket or chair, a picnic basket of goodies, and join us for some family-friendly film fun at these educational and entertaining outdoor screenings! See you there on Sat., and Sun., May 4 and 5 in #PalmDesert.
