In February, I told you to put your money on Floyd Mayweather in his contest against Manny Pacquiao, May 2nd 2015 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. With odds at 2 to 1 in his favor, a Mayweather bet would pay off about twice as much as usual.

The concern, of course, was his opponent, the great Manny Pacquiao. Many thought this stern challenger would be the one to topple Mayweather. A world champion in multiple weight classes, Pacquiao had defeated many of the same fighters Floyd had, and in more impressive fashion. De La Hoya, Floyd a narrow decision; Manny beat him up and made him quit. Hatton, Floyd wore him out and scored a later round knock out; Manny devastated him with one punch, putting him literally to sleep in two. Cotto, Floyd grabbed the decision; Manny stopped him before the final bell.

Going in to The Fight of the Century, Pacquiao was younger. He was a more dynamic puncher. He was thought to have fresher legs. And he had an almost religious desire to unseat bad boy Floyd. Partnered with the best trainer in the game, Freddie Roach, Pacquiao was well prepared mentally and physically.

Then there's the psychological angle. For years it appeared that Floyd was ducking his Philippino rival. One excuse after another. Maybe behind the scenes things were different, but the public perception was that Mayweather wanted no part of Pacquiao. Now, practically forced into the fight by public demand, Floyd appeared downright reluctant. He talked more about setting up a mind boggling nine figure payday than he did about setting up his opponent for counter punches. He spoke about how his love for boxing has waned, and how he was looking forward to an imminent retirement. Instead of trash talking, he spoke in respectful tones about his opponent, and said, "the fight sells itself." He kept reminding us that he's almost forty, and he doesn't feel the need to do this anymore. And, most telling of all, he said that we should all still consider him TBE (The Best Ever) even if he lost to Pacquiao. Even if he lost? Floyd never talked about losing. Never.

Maybe he WAS scared.

We've got to see this fight. We've got to buy this fight. And buy it we did. The previous record for live gate ticket sales at a boxing match was around $20 million. Mayweather vs Pacquiao raked in over $70 million. We're talking Superbowl numbers with 1/4 the seats. And while they're still counting the Pay Per View figures, preliminary reports indicate they've smashed all records there too. After the fight, Floyd was indeed handed a check with nine figures before the decimal point. On this front, even adjusting for inflation, Floyd Mayweather is The Best Prizefighter. Ever.

But what about the actual fight? Surprisingly to some, frustratingly to many, it turned out to be a typical Floyd Mayweather fight. Twelve relatively uneventful rounds, and Mayweather's hand raised after the announcement of a solid unanimous decision victory.

It went almost exactly as I thought it would. I had hoped that Pacquiao would come forward more and make it interesting. But, no doubt, he sensed what I did. That strategy would find him looking up at the lights while referee Kenny Bayless counted to ten.

Mayweather was two steps ahead of Manny all night long. Honestly, it was like he could see the punches coming before they were thrown. Like some kind of Jedi, Floyd would move to the left, to the right, to the rear, and each punch in the Pacquiao flurry would miss its mark. By inches or yards. Some would land on the gloves. Others on the arms. Many would just miss all together. Few would score, in spite of the roars of approval from the crowd. Then Floyd would counter with the right. Sometimes to the gut. Bam. Sometimes up stairs. Thud.

Manny became frustrated. Manny slowed down. Manny stopped. Manny was stopped. There was no knock out, but make no mistake, Floyd Mayweather stopped Manny Pacquiao Saturday night.

As expected, many people booed. "Boring!" "I'll never watch another Mayweather fight again." "Boxing's dead." "Fight of the Century my a$$." "He didn't fight!" "He ran."

Please watch the fight again. Mayweather didn't run. He slipped. He moved. He positioned himself for counters. He did not run. And much of the time, he stood his ground, and even pressed the action.

The fact that the fight wasn't more of a shootout is a testament to just how good Mayweather is. If Ali could have neutralized Frazier, he would have. He couldn't. But Mayweather did. Mayweather neutralized his Frazier. If this fight was going to be a slugfest, it was up to Pacquiao to make it happen. Can you imagine anyone keeping Tyson at bay? Even in defeat, Tyson kept coming. Mayweather held off his Tyson.

Pacquiao was Mayweather's most worthy challenger, a multiple world champion in multiple weight classes, fit, trim, and ready. Mayweather made him look ordinary. That's how good Mayweather is. That's why I put my money on him.

Is he really The Best Ever? Who knows? All anyone can really do is be the best of his era, and Floyd is surely that. Discussions of who is the greatest are endless. But now they include one more name: Floyd Mayweather.

Floyd's not going to fight much longer. He knows that there IS one opponent out there who will eventually beat him: Father time. And no one can blame him for ducking that challenger. So watch him while you can. I'm telling you, you're watching Michael Jordan, Jim Brown, Wayne Gretzky, and yes, Muhammad Ali, and Sugar Ray Robinson. Only someone like that could make Pacquiao look so ordinary, could make The Fight of the Century look so easy. Easy money. #hellscandy
