We cannot buy into the "perfect victim" narratives circulating about Christian Cooper. Yes, there is something satisfying about him being a Harvard grad who clearly contradicts racist stereotypes. But we should not have to be "extraordinary" to avoid being killed by the State. A lot of West Indians immigrate to America as “ extraordinary model minorities”, propagating this image of being somehow “better” than African Americans in respectable appearance and speech mannerisms.
I hate to break it to you, but the Central Park incident is also a reminder that we cannot piously behave our way out of White racism and supremacy. If the police had followed Amy Cooper's cue, the killers in blue would have had no interest in Christian's pedigree, personality, or purpose. He would have just been a Black threat that needed to be handled and extinguished in the same way George Floyd was brutally murdered in Minneapolis Minnesota.
