1770 Seven Years’ War Manuscript Map of Dunkirk, France

https://www.geographicus.com/P/AntiqueMap/Dunkirk-ecolemilitaire-1770

A finely executed 18th century manuscript plan or map of Dunkirk illustrating both the old and new ship canals. Probably dating from the Seven Years’ War (1756 - 1763) or slightly after, this map focuses on the two major canals giving access to Dunkirk's Harbor, the Canal du Mardick, take center stage an is just above the cartouche. An older ship's canal, in the upper right, provides access to the old citadel. It was part of Vauban's Pré Carré, a system of fortresses protecting northern France from naval attack. Dunkirk was of special significance as the primary access point to French inland navigation. Canals extending south from the Canal du Mardick, including the Canal de Furnes, Canal de Burgues, the Canal de Bourburg, connect to France's major northwestern rivers, including the Aa, the Escaut, the Lys, and the Furnes. It is not clear who produced this map but it has the aspect of a French Ecole Militaire mapping and was likely drawn by a hand trained in French military mapping protocol.

An utterly stunning 1864 Civil War Era Spanish Direccion de Hidrografia nautical chart or maritime map of Charleston Harbor, South Carolina. Probably issued for use by Spanish blockade runners during the American Civil War. The map covers the South Carolina coast from Sullivan Island to Folly Island, with a focus on Charleston Harbor. Similar attention has been given to the Charleston Harbor town of Mount Pleasant and Moultrieville, both of which have since been folded into greater Charleston.

1912 Hankow Daily News Map of Hankow / Hankou / Wuhan (after fire!)

https://www.geographicus.com/P/AntiqueMap/hankow-toppan-1912

This is a rare 1912 Chinese-English bilingual map of Hankow (Hankou), part of modern Wuhan, China. The map was issued by the English-language Hankou based newspaper, Hankow Daily News, shortly following the 1911 burning of Hankou by Qing loyalist forces during the Xinhai Revolution (October 18 - December 1, 1911). Oriented to the northwest, the map covers from the conjunction of the Han and Yangtze Rivers northward to the tracks of the Hankow-Peking Railway or Jinghan Railway (京漢鐵路). The map labels the foreign concessions established to the east of the older Chinese city of Hankou, among them British, Russian, French, German, and Japanese. The lands to the west of the concessions are overprinted with a grand grid structure in red - reflecting plans to rebuild the Chinese part of Hankou after its total immolation one year earlier.

https://www.geographicus.com/P/AntiqueMap/baleariclighthouses-geografico-1935

This is a 1935 Instituto Geografico map of the Balearic Islands. The map depicts the archipelago, which is made up of the islands of Majorca, Minorca, and Ibiza, along with the smaller islands Formentera and Cabrera. A beautiful piece, its most compelling feature is the illustration of the lighthouses and beacons installed on the coasts of the islands. The distance out in the Mediterranean each light can be seen is eye-catching, and details, such as the color of each light and frequency of flashes of different colors are also given. Numerous cities, towns, and villages are labeled throughout the islands. Roads and railroads are also illustrated, and different lines are used to denote variations in grade for both. A key is situated in the lower right corner that provides the viewer with an explanation of all the notations used.

1847 Japanese Edo Period Woodblock Map of the Izu Islands (Tokyo or Edo)

https://www.geographicus.com/P/AntiqueMap/IsuIslands-japanese-1730

An extraordinary find, this is a c. 1847 Tokugawa Period Japanese woodblock nautical chart of the Izu Islands (伊豆諸島 Izu-shoto). Oriented to the East, this map covers from Chiba, Kanagawa, and Sagami Bay southwards as far as Miyake and Mikurajima Islands. Traditionally referred to as the 'Izu Seven' (伊豆七島 Izu Shichito?), the Izu Islands are officially part of modern day Tokyo. Though many are uninhabited nature preserves, some of the Ize Islands host large town and villages. This map notes the locations of various shrines, towns, rivers, temples, and identifies local production specialties. With minimal inland detail this map can best be interpreted as a traditional Japanese nautical chart. Notes nautical routes and many offshore features including dangerous reefs and shoals. Though undated the latest information on this map dates to 1847 and the whole is stylistically consistent with our advertised date of c. 1847.

1592 Ortelius Map of the World: Typus Orbis Terrarum

https://www.geographicus.com/P/AntiqueMap/typusorbisterrarum-ortelius-1592

One of the most iconic maps of all time, this is Abraham Ortelius's 1592 map of the world, Typus Orbis Terrarum, here in the premier state of the 3rd edition. The map was published in Ortelius', Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, considered to be the first modern published atlas. The map embraces the entirety of the known world and, although it may seem wildly erroneous by most modern standards, it was incredibly sophisticated at the time of its publication. In compiling this map Ortelius drew on the best cartography available, including Gerard Mercator's map of 1569, Giocomo Gastaldi's 1561 World Map, Diego Gutierrez's portolan of the Atlantic, as well as other works by Sebastian Cabot, Jodocus Hondius, Orontius Finaeus, Petrus Plancius, Gemma Frisius, Laurentz Fries, and more.

Known as the 'Ratzen Plan,' this is one of the most important, beautiful, and iconic colonial era maps of New York City, offered here in its rare first state. This map was surveyed in 1767 by Bernard Ratzer, a lieutenant in the 'Royal American' regiment at the behest of Sir George Moore, governor of New York, who is sited in the cartouche. The map, which covers the southern part of Manhattan to about modern day 14th street, is a revision and expansion upon the flawed John Montresor plan of 1767.Gloria Deak in Picturing America describes the map as detailing,

1782 Esnauts and Rapilly Map of Paris France

https://www.geographicus.com/P/AntiqueMap/Paris-esnautsrapilly-1782

A fine 1782 dissected pocket map of Paris issued by Esnauts and Rapilly. Centered on the Seine, this map depicts Pre-Revolutionary Paris. As this map was being drawn Benjamin Franklin was the toast of the town, visiting to negotiate the Treaty of Paris that formally ended the American Revolutionary War. Though Revolutionary sentiment was high among the Parisian populace, it had not yet taken on the radicalism that would soon follow. Thus street names and building names here reflect their pre-Revolutionary status rather of the more egalitarian nomenclature adopted later in the Revolution (ie. Palais Royal = Palais de l'egalite).

1661 Van Loon Map of California as and Island

https://www.geographicus.com/P/AntiqueMap/NovaHispania-vanloon-1661

An example of Joannes van Loon's important 1661 map of the western coast of America including California as an Island. This is one of the earliest and rarest folio maps to focus on the Insular California myth. The map is oriented to the east, as navigators sailing for the important Mexican silver port of Acapulco from Far East would have experienced the approach. The title cartouche, in the upper let quadrant, features two simply dressed farmers with cycles, presumably a stylized attempt to illustrate the indigenous peoples of the Americas.

1905 Witaker and Ray Wall Pictorial Wall Map of the San Francisco Bay Area

https://www.geographicus.com/P/AntiqueMap/sanfranciscobaycounties-whitakerray-1905

One of the more graphically striking maps of the San Francisco Bay Area to appear in the early 20th century This is a scarce 1905 Whitaker and Ray wall map of the San Francisco Bay Area. The map covers the entire Bay Area, from Napa and San Pablo Bay to San Jose, Santa Clara, and Santa Cruz. Color coding defines Bay Area counties, including Marin, Sonoma, Napa, Solano, Sacramento, Contra Costra, Alameda, Santa Clara, San Mateo, and Santa Cruz. The street grid in San Francisco, Oakland, and San Jose is evident. San Francisco itself is somewhat exaggerated in scale to illustrate the city's important institutions, street grid, business, and bustling port. As are major rail lines throughout the region. Topography and forests are stunningly illustrated pictorially engendering a gripping visual effect. This map may have been inspired by the 1895 Bancroft map of the Bay Counties, but cartographically are unrelated. The map was issued by Whitaker and Ray for the Wilcox Building Commission.
