Santorini and its neighbors must contend with the etesiae — strong winds that blow across the Aegean Sea during the growing season. The winds often reach speeds of between 28 and 74 knots (gale-force) and often force yachts, ferries, and other small boats to dock…

To combat these devastating gales, viticulturists on Santorini have historically employed a unique training system: the basket vine. While the outside vines get stripped of leaves, inside leaves and grape bunches are sheltered from the winds and protected from sunburn and sandblasts. The shape also helps trap morning humidity and mists providing rare and precious moisture to the developing fruit within, especially important as there is no irrigation available for the vineyards.

In her latest piece for The Vintner Project, Andrea Lemieux @quirkycork takes us on an exploration of Santorini’s daring volcanic wines.

With world-famous French vigneron Stéphane Derenoncourt`s expertise and the winery’s 90 years of experience, Kavaklıdere has become an international player. “A bit of a Renaissance” describes the exploration of traditional and innovative winemaking Santiago Degasperi sees in present day Uruguay. Degasperi is the oenologist at Bodega Océanica José Ignacio, known for experimenting with fascinating projects—like aging wine in the ocean itself 🌊🌊…

The idea of Uruguayan wine or even the pairing of Uruguay with Tannat, its flagship grape, is somewhat of a monolith. In reality, winemakers explore the many microclimates and soil types that lie within the country’s borders and figure out how to untap its potential. As Daniel Pisano, 4th generation owner of Bodega Pisano notes, "We’re the only South American country producing wine on the Atlantic Ocean. We have a personality like no other. There’s a place for all of these wines that truly reflect the producer.”

In our latest feature on The Vintner Project, we explore the diversity of Uruguay’s future in wine. Check out the full article ➡️ https://vintnerproject.com/wine/uruguay-whats-next/‼️
