New data from IDWeek 2025 show that ceftazidime-avibactam (Avycaz) and ceftolozane-tazobactam (Zerbaxa) remain highly active against Pseudomonas aeruginosa, with susceptibility rates near 97%.

While resistance has crept up slightly over the last 10 years, these agents continue to be crucial tools against multidrug-resistant infections.

New research is shedding light on an important issue for people living with HIV: polypharmacy and drug–drug interactions.

A study of more than 20,000 veterans found that taking multiple non-ARV medications—and having overlapping drugs with known interactions—raises the risk of hospitalization. Those on 4-drug HIV regimens had the highest interaction burden, while simplified regimens had the lowest.

As people with HIV live longer, managing chronic conditions becomes more complex. This makes regular medication reviews and thoughtful regimen selection more important than ever.

Big news in HIV prevention: The CDC now recommends lenacapavir (Yeztugo) as a twice-yearly injectable PrEP option — the first of its kind.

Clinical trials showed remarkable protection:
• 100% efficacy in women
• 96% efficacy in men & gender-diverse participants

Because it’s given every six months, experts hope it will help people stay on PrEP longer. Some questions remain about insurance coverage and injection-site reactions, but the guidance marks an important expansion in HIV prevention tools.

A groundbreaking study may finally explain the long-suspected link between the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) and lupus (SLE). Researchers discovered that EBV can actually reprogram immune cells in a way that drives autoimmune disease.

Scientists say the mechanism could account for nearly all lupus cases — a major breakthrough in understanding this challenging condition.

If you follow autoimmune disease research, this one is big.

🧬 A new study has found that clade IIb mpox—the variant behind the 2022 global outbreak—causes less severe disease in mice than clade IIa. Researchers say clade IIb triggers a stronger immune response, which may explain the milder illness seen in recent human cases.

Experts stress that ongoing surveillance is essential, particularly as clade I and clade Ib mpox continue to circulate in Central Africa, where outbreaks remain difficult to control due to regional instability.

🦠 A Washington state resident has become the first person in the world to die from the H5N5 bird flu, according to health officials. The patient had been hospitalized since early November and likely contracted the virus from exposure to domestic birds.

Officials say the risk to the public remains low, and no other people exposed to the patient have tested positive. Public health teams continue to monitor close contacts to ensure no human-to-human spread.

Health experts recommend avoiding contact with sick or dead birds, not drinking raw milk, and getting your regular flu shot—especially for people who work with poultry or around wild birds.
