THE SOUTH SOUND MUSIC AND ART SPACE
The South Sound is a music and arts building built by professional contractors who have been constructing sound studios for over a decade. We the owners, are musicians ourselves and had the facility constructed with the goal in mind to be more than just practice spaces, but a music and arts community. With two well known recording studios on the premises, Translator Audio and The Civil Defense, and rooms designed for far above average sound separation we are a boutique facility that offers rooms below market value. The South Sound has Air Conditioning in every room (not just air flow but real AC) as well as proper heat. We have video surveillance, 24 hour access, a loading zone and an over all amazing atmosphere to make music. We are in the Gowanus/Park Slope neighborhood, a seven minute walk from the G, F, R lines. Our sound proofed rooms can be used by full bands, solo artists, DJs etc. We even have a few rooms specifically designed for DIY recording set-ups! Finally, we cannot overstate that this facility is meant to be a community of hard working musicians and artists, not just practice spaces. We are here to create things and help you make your space comfortable, whether that be by helping painting, building lofts or offering advice on in room sound treatments. Other spaces are more expensive and offer fewer amenities than we do, we keep our prices lower though we offer more because we want to have a choice of good people in the building, we are tenants ourselves! We even have a few labels living within our walls like Rising Pulse Records and CoExtinction Records. Get in touch if you would like to join us, let us know what you are looking for.
The fantastic 'Tidal Arms' share their love of great sounds and peculiar disaster stories to benefit Translator Audio and The South Sound. - A very very big thank you!
"Andrew Schneider from Translator Audio has made some of our favorite records, recorded our first 7" and mixed The Sun Exploding, and shares our love for the bizarre story of the Molasses Flood. His studio, Translator Audio and The South Sound rehearsal studios, were tragically destroyed in Hurricane Sandy. They're starting over, and we're releasing "Molasses" as a fundraiser for the rebuild."

God I miss this place so damn much. It's been one year since the storm and it feels like last week.
The South Sound has been defunct now for the past 6 months due to hurricane sandy and we have been trying to find a new location using any means we can think of. So far, we have looked at dozens of spaces and none have met our needs as a business. If anyone knows of a space that may work for us or if anyone knows of someone who may be able to assist us in finding our much needed new home, please message us here or at [email protected]. The space we originally had was 7000 square feet. At this point we will look at any space between 7000 and 2000 square feet cause we may be able to make anything in that size range work for us. Thank you all in advance for your help.
The South Sound would like to thank Chris Santos, David Delzio, Ted Allen, Amanda Freitag, Josh Capon, Aaron Sanchez, Roble Ali, Juliya Chernetsky, Carrie Keagan, Tim Martinez, Erica Koffler, Cynthia (and Tyson), Marlo Marquise, Albert Cadabra, Dan Sperry, Gal Friday, Tammany Hall and all of the staff, Anyone who donated, or bought a ticket. I am fully aware this will read like the most cheeseball "post disaster hallmark card" ever but - sometimes it takes losing everything to realize how lucky you are. The outpouring of help from all around the world right now is jaw dropping. Our hearts and our spirits are being lifted every minute by everyone who is rushing to our aid. We are still trying to organize help and will be giving updates of benefit shows etc., in the near future but for now here is a link to our donation page. http://unfloodbkmusic.blogspot.com/
We would like to take this time to extend our gratitude to those that came to our aid and are helping us through this crisis and helping us recover from the storm surges of Hurricane Sandy. We would also like to thank our clients for their continued support. We are humbled by your sympathy and your selflessness.
