PHILLIPPINE SEA (June 14, 2020) The Los Angeles-class fast-attack submarine USS Asheville (SSN 758) transits alongside the U.S. 7th Fleet flagship USS Blue Ridge (LCC 19) during a submarine familiarization (SUBFAM) training. The SUBFAM was conducted so Blue Ridge's crew could observe the characteristics of a submarine and how it looks both acoustically and visually while in the vicinity of the ship. Blue Ridge is the oldest operational ship in the Navy, and, as U.S. 7th Fleet flagship, actively works to foster relationships with allies and partners in the Indo-Pacific region. USS Indianapolis CA-35. PEARL HARBOR 1937 The Portland-class heavy cruiser USS Indianapolis (CA 35) underway in Pearl Harbor in 1937. The ship was sunk on July 30, 1945 by an Imperial Japanese submarine in the Philippine Sea following delivery of parts for Little Boy, the first atomic bomb used in combat, to the United States air base at Tinian. Of 1,196 crewmen aboard, approximately 300 went down with the ship. The remaining 900 faced exposure, dehydration, saltwater poisoning, and shark attacks while floating with few lifeboats and almost no food or water. The Navy learned of the sinking when survivors were spotted four days later by the crew of a PV-1 Ventura on routine patrol. Only 317 survived. (U.S. Navy photo)

HMS ALBION
On the 29th August 2017 HMS ALBION had her first Aerial photos after coming out of refit at HMNB Devonport.

HMS ALBION was in refit since 2011 and in January 2017, 350 Sailors joined her to start the final preparations to get her ready for going back to sea.

HMS Albion is one of the Royal Navy’s two amphibious assault ships. Together, their mission is to deliver the punch of the Royal Marines ashore by air and sea.

HMS Albion has been described as the Royal Navy’s ‘Swiss Army knife’ – and for good reason. This amphibious transport dock is capable of carrying 400 sailors and Royal Marines with a huge range of skills and experience, from technicians and engineers to medics and chefs.

The loading dock of HMS Albion is packed with the trucks, machinery and water craft her crew use to carry out their duties. The ship also carries emergency supplies for use in disaster relief operations, from food supplies to water pumps Photo MOD Crown Copyright #royalnavy #uk #navy #ship #usn #veteran

#OTD in 1944, USS Missouri (BB-63) was commissioned and became the last U.S. Navy battleship to be built. USS Wisconsin (BB-64) had a higher hull number but was completed before the Missouri. USS Illinois (BB-65) and USS Kentucky (BB-66) had been laid down but were canceled when the Navy shifted priority to aircraft carrier construction. This is the "Mighty Mo" demonstrating her fury in 1991.

On this day: 54 years ago, a Lockheed F-104 Starfighter collided with the No. 2 prototype of the North American XB-70 Valkyrie during a photo op (June 8, 1966). The midair collision destroyed both aircraft, kills two, and lead to the cancellation of the XB-70 project (in the long run).

On this day: 39 years ago, eight Israeli F-16s attacked Iraq’s Osirak nuclear reactor near Baghdad (June 7, 1981). Within 80 seconds, the F-16s delivered 16 MK-84 bombs with pin-point accuracy and completely destroyed Saddam Hussein's dream of developing a nuclear weapon. Operation Opera, the first successful attack on a nuclear reactor, made headlines across the globe.
