The Lee Strasberg Theatre & Film Institute is partnering with Sixty-Six Theater Co, CBG Arts, Inglewood Theatre Group, and Brandon Rainey to present a live stream staged reading of the powerful new play, Hello America.

Written and directed by Brandon Rainey, Hello America features an incredible cast of Black actors telling a hilarious yet emotional story of identity, masculinity, fatherhood, and love using creative storytelling, monologue, music and film. The play is inspired by “For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide / When the Rainbow Is Enuf”, “For Black Boys Who Have Considered Homicide When the Streets Were Too Much” and the episode “Papa’s Got a Brand New Excuse” from The Fresh Prince of Bel Air. Hello America earned attention at sold-out workshop performances at Greenway Court Theater, USC, and UCLA.

The performance will be live streamed from the Marilyn Monroe Theatre in West Hollywood, California on Friday, June 5th at 8:00pm PST. Head to www.sixtysixtheater.com/shows to tune in.

We bear witness to and are deeply saddened by the immeasurable injustices and pain endured by the Black members of our community and our country. We offer our love and heartfelt compassion to those who are suffering and to those who are engaged in the fight for justice.

As a community of artists, we celebrate and value the richly diverse and powerful voices, talent, culture, stories and history of all people. It is our responsibility to ensure that each voice is equally significant and vital in the arts and to all of us as fellow human beings.

It will take more than a declaration of support for justice and equality to stand against the history of racism and institutionalized oppression in this country. We have a responsibility, as artists and as human beings, to take an active role in shaping the future we wish to see. We vow to do more to embrace and amplify the works of black artists and artists of color in our teaching, in our performances, and in all of our artistic pursuits.

Let us dedicate our voices and take action toward building a new reality — in the arts and in every field of human endeavor — based on respect, equity, justice, inclusivity and a profound belief in the significance of each person.

Make your voices heard. We are with you.

Anna Strasberg and all of us at The Lee Strasberg Theatre & Film Institute honor the life and transcendent talent of Shirley Knight.

In her over 60-year career on the stage and in film and television, she was known for her dedication to the craft of acting and not being afraid to make bold choices.

After two early Academy Award nominations, she sought a release from her studio contract to study acting in New York with Lee Strasberg. She explained, “When I was doing ‘Sweet Bird of Youth,’ Geraldine Page and Paul [Newman] and the whole cast were so experienced. I felt like there’s something they knew that I didn’t.”

She turned down the role of Ophelia to Richard Burton’s “Hamlet” on Broadway, choosing instead to be in Lee’s acclaimed 1964 production of “The Three Sisters” with Geraldine Page and Kim Stanley.

Ms. Knight wrote a moving tribute to Lee for LSTFI’s 50th Anniversary celebration in 2019: “Lee was largely responsible for my learning about acting and the type of actress I wanted to be. He was a great teacher and director. That production of ‘The Three Sisters’ was a seminal experience for me as a young actress and influenced so many things that came after.”

Tennessee Williams admired her work, referring to her performance in “A Streetcar Named Desire” as “my perfect Blanche.” Later, he wrote “A Lovely Sunday for Creve Coeur” for her.

Shirley Knight appeared in 30 major theatre productions, 75 films and over 40 television programs. She received 4 Academy Award nominations, winning 1; a Tony Award; a Golden Globe Award; and 8 Emmy nominations, winning 3.

We shall miss our dear friend. Her light will always shine brightly in the firmament.
