The 2nd edition of Audit Analytics is out!

This book, using R and RStudio, not only demonstrates how to render a legally and statistically defensible audit opinion, but also provides practical guidance on how to analyze, extract, and manipulate accounting data, and build a risk assessment matrix. It's a comprehensive resource that empowers you to conduct a cost-effective audit program and more.

Today, information technology plays a pivotal role in financial control and auditing: most financial data is digitally recorded and dispersed among servers, clouds, and networks, over which the audited firm has no control. Additionally, a firm’s data―particularly in the case of finance, software, insurance, and biotech firms―comprises most of the audited value of the firm. Financial audits are critical mechanisms for ensuring the integrity of information systems and organizational financial reporting. They help avoid the abuses that led to the passage of legislation such as the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (1977) and the Sarbanes-Oxley Act (2002).

Audit effectiveness has declined over the past two decades as auditor skillsets have failed to keep up with advances in information technology. This book, designed to meet the increasing needs of audit professionals, provides the latest insights on information technology and the controls required to manage it. This 2nd edition includes updated code and tests, ensuring you stay informed and up-to-date in your field.

The material included in this book is not just theoretical but also highly practical. It focuses on the requirements for annual Securities and Exchange Commission audits (10-K) for listed corporations, which are the benchmark auditing procedures for specialized audits. Many examples reflect the focus of the 2024 CPA exam, ensuring you're well-prepared and confident in your knowledge.

Book recommendations: Two of my colleagues, Jonathon Clements and Avi Datta have new books out that I highly recommend.

Jon is an authority on Chinese and Japanese history, and an insightful and irreverent observer of East Asian history. For anyone wanting to understand the current politics surrounding Taiwan and China, Rebel Island is a must-read, and a very accessible narrative on a complex topic.

Avi is an award winning Sci-Fi author who also happens to be an academic in my area (and in Illinois). His new book "The Reset" is a page turner and the 3rd in his "Time Corrector" series. All of his books are free to borrow on Kindle Unlimited (so what's stopping you?)

I’ve just completed my new book "The Book of Light" which is my extended meditation on light and all of its associated technologies. This is the second in a series of books intended to introduce young readers to STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) topics in an engaging way. I am hoping to find enough success to continue the series on numerous other interesting STEM topics. But light has been a particular passion of mine, and this book has given me the opportunity to experiment with literary styles.

The Book of Light arose from my fascination with light and all of its intricacies. Light is the substance that conceptually binds the quantum to the relativistic worlds. Relative spatial reference frames have been around since Galileo, but light (or the constancy of its speed in all reference frames) spawned the Einsteinian revolution. Newton thought that light was made of particles. A century after Newton’s Opticks the prodigy Thomas Young conducted his two-slit experiment to support a wave theory of light. Today we accept light as being both wave and particle, as with all matter. Light is our window to reality.

My series of STEM books is intended to engage younger readers, just as I was engaged in such books when I was growing up. I originally saw these as childrens' books for adults, using slightly larger print and vivid, fanciful, hallucinatory illustrations to emphasize and augment the prose. I found that according to a January 2023 WordsRated statistics, 51% of young adult (YA) books are purchased by people between the ages of 30 and 44, and 78% of those buyers said that they intended to read the books themselves. In recent years, librarians report that more middle grade readers (traditionally eight- to 12-year-olds) are “reading up” to YA books.

Here are pictures of the cover, table of contents and the first few stories.

I’ve just completed my new book Revolutionary Bites: Bite-Size Tales from Science, Industry and Politics, a set of 60 short stories intended to introduce young readers to STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics), management and finance topics in an engaging way.

I wanted this to engage teenage readers, just as I was engaged in such books when I was growing up. To capture young minds, you need a bit of “sex, drugs and rock’n’roll” but in family-friendly form (sorry, no NSFW content).

I originally envisioned this as a children’s book for adults, using slightly larger print and vivid, fanciful, hallucinatory illustrations leading each of the 60 stories. But then I found that according to a January 2023 WordsRated statistics, 51% of young adult (YA) books are purchased by people between the ages of 30 and 44, and 78% of those buyers said that they intended to read the books themselves.
