The FDNY reminds New Yorkers and visitors to our great city to follow these safety tips to help beat the heat today, and throughout the warm summer months:
o Drink fluids, particularly water, even if you do not feel thirsty. Your body needs water to keep cool. Those on fluid-restricted diets or taking diuretics should first consult their physician.
o Water is the safest liquid to drink during heat emergencies. Avoid beverages containing alcohol and/or caffeine.
o Avoid strenuous activity, especially during the sun’s peak hours: 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM. If you must do strenuous activity, do it during the coolest part of the day, which is usually in the morning between 4:00 AM and 7:00 AM.
o Check on vulnerable neighbors, family and friends to make sure they are safe, cool and hydrated. This includes the elderly, young children and those with pre-existing medical conditions.
o Wear loose, lightweight, light-colored clothing, plus a hat and sunglasses.
o Apply an SPF sunscreen (15 or above) regularly, even when it’s cloudy. o Know the warning signs of heat stress. If you or someone you know feels weak or faint, go to a cool place and drink water. If there is no improvement, call a doctor or 911.
o Call 911 immediately if you have, or someone you know has:
*Hot dry skin OR cold clammy skin.
*Confusion, disorientation, or dizziness.
*Nausea and vomiting.
o Stay indoors with the air conditioner on. If you must go outside, limit your time outdoors and find shade when possible.
o Do not plug your air conditioner into an extension cord. Large appliances should always be plugged directly into a wall outlet.
o If you don’t have access to air conditioning, follow NYC 311 for info on finding a cooling center near you.
o Conserve energy by turning off the lights when you leave a room.
