After months of prep and a whirlwind week of shooting, production on the Erika Film Foundation Thesis Film, NEIGHBORS, came to an end in August. Every evening after filming, the crew held a meeting to review dailies and discuss ways to improve the next day's set. Our Fellows displayed amazing leadership on set - especially Writer and Director, Elisabeth Viel. We’re so grateful for our partnership with Erika Film Foundation which made the International Thesis Film Project possible, and for the guidance and expertise of everyone who helped us wrap this shoot safely and successfully. Our Fellows are excited to get started with post-production, and screen their work very soon! #film #covid19 #ghettofilmschool

For the Erika Film Foundation International Thesis Film shoot, NEIGHBORS, our GFS NY Fellows recreated a remote South-Korean countryside in New York with amazing attention to detail. The crew worked with a combination of natural and artificial light, and dressed the set with specific props and food to sharpen the authenticity of the film.

In 2018, after teaching a class at GFS LA, Ryan Coogler invited our entire class of Fellows to the Black Panther premiere. "It was an indescribable experience," said one of our alums, "To see how much care and effort was going into this film behind the scenes, made me understand how if you're an artist, you're doing the same thing regardless of what level you were working on - trying to tell the best story you can."

Chadwick Boseman was a shining example of creative excellence for our students to aspire to, a genuine talent who brought a generosity of spirit and purpose to his work that will inspire an entire generation of storytellers.

Ciao a GFS!

The GFS Fellows who participated in the NatGeo Rome Thesis Film last summer created a special video to send words of support and gratitude to our partners at Istituto Luce Cinecittà and Image Hunters.
We want to express our deepest condolences for the incredibly difficult challenges that the people of Italy are facing right now.
We are all looking forward to a day not too far away when we can rise from this crisis, and come together again in celebration of great storytelling around the world! ❤️ 🇮🇹 ❤️

General information

Joe Hall founded Ghetto Film School (GFS) to educate, develop and celebrate the next generation of great American storytellers. Through his leadership, GFS opened The Cinema School in September 2009 — a select-admissions NYC public institution that is the nation’s first film high school. Both are located in the South Bronx neighborhood where Joe has lived and worked for the last 22 years. Since that time, more than 500 students have participated in GFS programs and workshops, coming from all areas of New York City to our South Bronx training facilities for hands-on production and cinema studies courses.
