Highlighting the first of our three 2022 GFS X Netflix Content Creation Program winners: David Fortune! @bydave_fortune

Born the eighth child of ten siblings, David was only privy to content viewed by his older siblings such as Malcolm X, Menace II Society, and Higher Learning. However, these stories sculpted his creative mind later, when he gravitated to directing narratives that focused on societal dramas, while studying film at Morehouse College and Loyola Marymount University’s graduate program.

Afterward, David was selected as a participant for the Village Roadshow Emerging Talent Program to develop a documentary based on the cultural and dance icon, Tommy the Clown. He later was accepted into the Viacom - ViewFinders Emerging Director Program where he shadow directed two episodes of 13 REASONS WHY. In addition to these accolades, David finished as a finalist under The Wrap’s Shortlist for his film, Z –MAN, and was named the winner of the Urbanworld Film Festival’s Young Creators Showcase, for his dramatic short, LACED. Recently, David’s screenplay, SHOEBOX, was selected for the Indeed and Hillman Grad’s Rising Voice Program. Out of 850 applicants, SHOEBOX went on to be produced and premiered at the 2021 Tribeca Film Festival.

General information

Joe Hall founded Ghetto Film School (GFS) to educate, develop and celebrate the next generation of great American storytellers. Through his leadership, GFS opened The Cinema School in September 2009 — a select-admissions NYC public institution that is the nation’s first film high school. Both are located in the South Bronx neighborhood where Joe has lived and worked for the last 22 years. Since that time, more than 500 students have participated in GFS programs and workshops, coming from all areas of New York City to our South Bronx training facilities for hands-on production and cinema studies courses.
