At GFS we’re immensely proud of building a culture and a community that thrives even beyond the classroom. Multiple generations of Fellows and GFS Family often come together to collaborate and support each other on their creative journeys, like last week when Anali Cabrera (Class of 2018), Erick Grajeda (Class of 2020), Kat Torres (Class of 2023) and Kyle Provencio Reingold (GFS LA Teaching Artist) worked together on their short @onslausonmovie. At GFS, we partner with leaders in arts, education and business to push the culture forward on issues of inclusion and creativity.

GFS SCOPE partnered with Neutrogena Studios in the summer of 2021 to introduce Neutrogena Studios: First Frame ™, an eight month program where young filmmakers are paired with a dedicated mentor to guide them through their filmmaking journey. Sarah Jean Williams and Kyra Peters each won a $25,000 production award to develop their short films.

"With the platform, resources and creative freedom that SCOPE provided to me, I was able to write a deeply personal story about The Bronx - my hometown- and its inhabitants who are often misrepresented in modern media", said Kyra Peters. "Respectful and caring representation in the media is vital, and authentic work is what helps bring marginalized and silenced voices to the forefront. That's what working with SCOPE allowed me to do." said Sarah Williams.

At GFS, we create meaningful professional experiences and job placements for our students, alumni and the Roster community. Alyse Arteaga is a GFS LA Alum and Roster member. Alyse also worked as a Documentary Series/Film Development Intern for CNN from June - September 2021.

"At my internship, I received hands-on training on how to conduct myself, both in a corporate and creative environment", said Alyse. "Beyond my daily tasks, this internship also includes a mock development project which gave me great insight to what companies are looking for in a pitch. Coverage exercises and other narrative lessons I received at GFS have also been very helpful in establishing myself as an experienced intern."

At GFS, we teach young filmmakers to develop their voices and give them a platform to tell their stories to the world. Kiara Battle (pictured) is a first year GFS NY Fellow from the Bronx, along with her sister Kayle. Kiara screened her first short film, “Our Separate Rooms” in October, at the Director’a Guild Theater. She was also one of three recipients of a higher education scholarship.

“Viewing my sister’s and my films on the big screen at the Directors Guild of America theater at the age of seventeen, is something I couldn’t have imagined even last year.” said Kiara. “I am more than thankful to the Ghetto Film School Fellows Program and staff as they are helping me reinvent my future and have given me access to so many cool experiences already!”

We partnered with Picture Shop @pictureshoppost for the color finishing post-production on 5 of our LA-based filmmakers’ short films. They were empowered to shoot their shorts on 16mm film in partnership with the Huntington Library, Art Museum, and Botanical Gardens. In addition to a curriculum co-taught by Huntington curators, the filmmakers also had access to the Huntington’s art collection for inspiration and their vast grounds as the setting for their films. General information

Joe Hall founded Ghetto Film School (GFS) to educate, develop and celebrate the next generation of great American storytellers. Through his leadership, GFS opened The Cinema School in September 2009 — a select-admissions NYC public institution that is the nation’s first film high school. Both are located in the South Bronx neighborhood where Joe has lived and worked for the last 22 years. Since that time, more than 500 students have participated in GFS programs and workshops, coming from all areas of New York City to our South Bronx training facilities for hands-on production and cinema studies courses.
