Wallace Hartley’s Titanic Violin.
Wallace Hartley, bandleader aboard the Titanic, became a poignant symbol of bravery. As the ship went down on April 14, 1912, he and his fellow musicians played on, comforting passengers with music. Their likely final piece was “Nearer, My God, to Thee.”
Hartley’s body was recovered days later, still in his uniform and holding a violin case. Inside was the violin Maria Robinson, his fiancée, had given him—engraved with a heartfelt message.
The instrument vanished from public record until it resurfaced in 2006 in a countryside attic. After seven years of authentication—including tests on the wood, engraving, and saltwater damage—experts confirmed its identity.
Auctioned in 2013, the violin sold for $1.7 million, but its emotional value far outweighed the price. It stands as a haunting relic of devotion, music, and calm amid disaster.
