Knicks Draft Comes Down to Timing, Probability and Fate

Let me share with you a secret: I was invited by the NBA to be a witness to the NBA Draft Lottery drawing this year in Chicago.

And I respectfully declined.

There's no way my heart could take it. I also could not guarantee there wouldn't be a Braveheart roar if the Knicks happened to have won it in my presence among others invited to silently observe.

And, just so you know, the Knicks are not supposed to win this thing anyway.

Oh, sure, they had the worst record, which means they should have the best chance to win. But no, not really. Not anymore.

The NBA changed the system this year to almost ensure the team with the worst record wasn't a lock to win it. That's curious because in the history of the lottery, only seven times has the team with the worst record ever actually won it.

Only 7 times in 34 years.

But the trend changed dramatically in recent years. The worst record has won it in four straight times, from the Timberwolves in 2015 to the Suns last year. That right there would suggest the Knicks won't win it this year. It would be hard to imagine the lottery playing out to the worst record for a fifth straight year.

Actually, as we know in the revamped lottery odds, the Knicks have a better chance to get the fifth pick than get No. 1. So you can say it's already rigged to keep the Knicks from landing the top pick and Zion Williamson when they reveal the NBA Draft Lottery drawing on Tuesday night in Chicago.

A Year of Development Leads to Crucial Offseason for Knicks

The Knicks season ended with one more loss that hardly went noticed as it was tossed onto the pile of 65 that were collected. We had almost stopped counting some point before the all-star break. Bookkeeping still needs to be done and all we know is this year won't live alone in infamy as the worst in franchise history. It merely matched that of the 2014-15 season.

But unlike 2014-15, this year still has a chance to redeem itself as one to remember, not forget. This was a season that saw the Knicks give three rookies, Kevin Knox, Mitchell Robinson and Allonzo Trier, a wealth of playing time to grow. They added a second-year player in Dennis Smith Jr. in the Kristaps Porzingis trade and there's also evidence to believe players like Daymean Dotson and Luke Kornet have showed enough to be keepers to fill out a roster that, with about $70 million in salary cap space to spend, is expected to have a lot more talent and experience next season.

"I think we got a chunk of young guys that I think can move forward with us in the future," Fizdale said, "and be able to fill in some spots around some veteran players and start moving in a direction of winning."

A lot depends on what happens after July 1.

But the primary reason why this season might still be one to remember could be what happens on May 14, the date of the NBA Draft Lottery.

Knicks Playing Season Finale Like It’s Game 7

The Knicks have been eliminated from the playoffs for about a month or so, but they'll play in an elimination game on Wednesday. David Fizdale took the last seven games of the regular season and told his team to treat it like a playoff series. So "Game 7" is against the Detroit Pistons at the Garden in a game the Pistons have to win to clinch the 8th seed in the East.

"We just want to keep they ass out," Dennis Smith Jr. told MSG's Rebecca Haarlow. "We ain't got too much to play for other than pride right now, so we don't want to lay down. If we can ruin somebody else's season, we'll do it."

If the Knicks find a way to win, it would give them a "series" win of the seven games. It started with the loss to the Heat on March 30 and continued to the April 1 win against the Bulls, which evened it at 1. Then came losses to the Magic and Rockets, which, as Fizdale noted, put the team down 3-1.

Consecutive wins over the Wizards and Bulls have suddenly evened this "series" at 3.

"Now we've won two in a row to get a Game 7 on our home court," Fizdale said.

Fizdale raved about how the players stayed locked in despite the season winding down. At this point, on lottery-bound teams, most players blow off shoot-arounds and teams don't really watch much film. But Fizdale said the Knicks spent a half-hour on film before the Bulls game and did an hour on the court for shoot-around.

"I'm really trying to train their minds to understand what you gotta do be a team that plays in the playoffs," Fizdale said. "They really took the challenge and they really wanted to win this game."

The last two wins have come against lottery teams that, like the Knicks, played mostly young players and G-League call-ups. The Pistons will have Blake Griffin, Andre Drummond and the rest coming for a playoff berth. It will be a slightly different level of basketball.

Hezonja Making a Case To Stay With Knicks

The reports about Mario Hezonja leading into the NBA Draft described an athletic player who stood out in the European game as a scorer off the bench in the ACB league in Spain. He'd been playing pro in Croatia at the age of 14. The NBA seemed inevitable and yet when he got to Orlando as the fifth overall pick, he looked lost.

Hezonja was a player without a position who struggled in a traditional system that told him to play off the ball. To him, he was a scorer and a playmaker. But in his first three-plus seasons in the NBA, he didn't look like he fit.

Then, out of desperation, with every point guard on the roster out with injury, David Fizdale gave him the ball.

"Back at home," Hezonja said, "this was my natural position."

Point-forward is the only way to describe it. Hezonja is a different man in this role. He's engaged, directing traffic, competitive and, actually, quite good.

He followed up his first career triple-double in Houston with a career-high 30 points, including the go-ahead three-pointer with 44.8 seconds to go. Hezonja shot 12 for 21 from the field and was 3 for 6 from downtown. He added 6 rebounds, 5 assists and 2 steals in his 36 minutes of action.

There's only two games left in the season, but David Fizdale says he definitely wants to see more.

"Let's keep looking at it and seeing where this takes him," Fizdale said, "and see if that's something that really is where he should be in the future."

OK so here comes some harsh reality, which must be added for proper perspective. The bulk of Hezonja's triple-double against the Rockets came in the fourth quarter of a game the Knicks trailed by 42 points. He was doing it against Houston's subs. The heroics in the comeback win over the Wizards was done with all-star Bradley Beal sitting out the final 18 minutes of the game and veteran Jeff Green sitting out the entire second half.

But that doesn't mean Hezonja, who will be a free agent, isn't showing something to consider for next season....

Young Knicks Learn Valuable Lesson About Respect

For most people involved with the Knicks, the season can't end soon enough. For the Rockets starters, this game could't end soon enough.

So during the last television timeout of the fourth quarter, James Harden, Chris Paul and company left the gym and headed to the locker room to escape having to watch what was essentially the Westchester Knicks -- Billy Garrett, John Jenkins, Henry Ellenson and Luke Kornet -- play against the Rockets bench.

Disrespectful? It was in the eyes of Hall of Famer Walt Frazier. Bill Pidto and I agreed on the postgame show. But Houston, winners of 19 of their last 22, seemed more annoyed to even play against this injury-depleted lineup of players most of them hadn't ever heard of. The Knicks didn't have a healthy point guard available and, with DeAndre Jordan given the rest of the season off, had just nine players available.

This thing was over after 12 minutes, when the Rockets doubled the Knicks up, 32-16. By halftime it was 29. After three quarters it was 39. Two minutes into the fourth, it maxed out at a 42-point deficit for the Knicks.

Harden, an MVP candidate again, had 26 points, 8 rebounds and 8 assists. He made 5 threes and took 13, which helped him become the first player in NBA history to eclipse 1,000 three-pointers attempted in a season. Harden only seemed engaged when Knicks rookie Mitchell Robinson was switched on to him. Otherwise, he rooked the Knicks.

"He did a MVP and toyed with us," David Fizdale said. "That's what greatness does to young players."

Fizdale was being respectful. Harden after the game talked about how his team was "building good habits" and several times referenced how you have to play "no matter who we're playing" or "playing four quarters like it was any other team." Assistant coach Jeff Bzdelik, in place of flu-ridden Mike D'Antoni, called it "a solid, professional effort."

The conspicuous absence of the Rockets starters from the bench in the final minutes of the game was explained away as the veterans simply wanting to get a jump on their postgame treatment and weight-training.

Did the Knicks deserve better? You earn the respect you're given. Was it unprofessional by the Rockets? No one in Houston seemed to think so.
