Slant'd Issue 03 Submissions

📣 Calling all Asian American writers, photographers, and artists:

Mag Mob publication Slant'd is now accepting story idea submissions for Issue 03 of our literary print magazine.

Theme: ~TABOO~
We all have something that we keep in the shadows. Taboos are seen as forbidden behaviors and attitudes — but who’s to say that what’s considered a mark of shame to one can’t be a point of pride to another? Issue 03 is your chance to shatter the stigma. It’s the ultimate test of vulnerability. What is your secret? And how does it shape your Asian American identity?

It’s time to shine a light on these taboos — from getting plastic surgery to seeking therapy; from engaging in ethical non-monogamy to engaging in drug use; from interracial dating to male sensitivity. It’s time to stop “saving face.” It’s time to celebrate the taboos in our lives. Think of what you could learn about yourself and others by stepping out of the shadows and embracing the things that make us different. Because being proud of your identity should never be taboo.

We publish bold and provocative creative non-fiction stories in the form of: personal essays, short stories, poetry, photography, and illustration.

We accept work from creators of all Asian backgrounds (yes, this includes hapas/mixed-race Asians) across generations (not just Millennials) and geographies (beyond the coasts) — we've featured a few folks from Project Boat in past issues! :)

Deadline: 11:59 PM PST on March 1, 2019

**Note: We are asking for your story idea only—should your work be chosen, our editorial team will workshop your final story with you.**

Have you heard? Slant'd Issue 02 is finally available for pre-order: https://slantd.media/preorder-issue-02

It's our boldest + most provocative issue to date and we can't wait to share it with you! It features 12 stories by 20 Asian Americans all over the US and covers a range of topics from masculinity to colorism.

We're running an amazing pre-order campaign that has exclusive pre-order swag, along with discounted prices for Issue 02, 01, and annual membership. Order by 11/15 to save 20%!

**ISSUE 02: LIGHT & DARK IS NOW AVAILABLE FOR PRE-ORDER**

As the theme Light & Dark suggests, the stories featured in Issue 02 bravely confront the messiness of self-discovery and celebrate the freedom that comes from reclaiming your identity on your own terms.

Through provocative storytelling in the form of personal essays, poetry, photography, and illustration from #badasians all over the US, our latest issue bravely treads into nuances of the new Asian American narrative and covers topics from coming out to colorism; political resistance to reclaiming masculinity; cyberbullying to sexual fantasies; and more.

LOIS Magazine Issue #1

Another new mag that needs your help to be born into the world! Check out: LOIS — in the company of growing women. It’s a bi-annual print magazine for teen girls (and older). Made by recent grad Mariah, who just finished up graphic design school a few months ago and had to design an entire magazine on their own for a quarter-long project. Check out LOIS!

A bi-annual print magazine for teen girls (and older!) filled with personal stories and advice from women who have been there.

As #AsianPacificAmericanHeritageMonth (#APAHM) comes to a close, we're excited to share a TEDx talk given by one of our very own 😍

Check out the TEDx JHU talk by Slant'd co-founders Katerina Jeng and Krystie Mak on the power of storytelling — and learn about how and why they're using Slant'd as a community building platform to help strengthen the #AsianAmerican community, cultivate empathy across cultures, and redefine what it means to be Asian American today.

Remember that time our co-founders gave a TEDx talk at Johns Hopkins University for TEDx JHU's 2018 conference: Forging the Future?

We know that some of you were able to catch the live stream, but for those who missed it — don't worry. We got you. 😘

Check out the official video below to watch their TEDx talk on the power of storytelling!

7 Modern Day Zine Makers on Empowerment, Resistance, and the Post-Internet Zine Renaissance

“Zines are a living archive that will probably long outlast digital ephemera. They are political tools.”

"In the publishing world in which the most valued voices remain white, cis, heterosexual, the accessibility of zines allow for a form of resistance.”

Check out this recent post by THE HUNDREDS, which covers some of the ideas that we discussed at our first panel on the future of indie publishing.

Thanks to Alex Wong for shining a light on the subculture of indie publishing and S/O to our sister magazine Slant'd for including us in the conversation ⚡
