Congrats to Cristian Măcelaru for his appointment to lead the Orchestre National de France. I first met him on tour when he was assistant conductor with Philadelphia Orchestra and then 2015 was a big year when I photographed him conducting the Danish National Symphony Orchestra and making debut with New York Philharmonic. I had a good feeling he was on his way to a big career.

“What makes NYO-USA so special is that a large group of musicians come together with the same passion for music, willing to create something beyond what the notes on the page say. Whereas other programs may be more individually focused, NYO-USA is at its core collaborative.” —Annalisa Welinder, NYO-USA Violinist

Strauss’s famous tone poem “Also sprach Zarathustra,” which calls for the biggest bell we have, the mighty low E bell 🔔.
