With food often their center piece, English novelist Barbara Pym’s stories present a loving, witty look at English middle-class life in mid-century England. Conversations overheard in restaurants provided some of the remarkable fodder for Pym's hungry imagination and gentle humor. As Laura Shapiro notes in her riveting “What She Ate,” Pym’s appreciation of good food defies the English reputation for ignoring one of life’s most sensual offerings. “What She Ate, Six Remarkable Women & the Food That Tells Their Stories” hits bookstores today.

Eva Braun’s last meal on earth took place in a bunker hidden under the Reich Chancellery insulated from the Russian military fire taking place 30 feet above it. The contents of the meal remain unrecorded; the guess is that she ate nothing prior to biting into the cyanide pill. Despite the sumptuous offerings at her disposal throughout World War II, Eva Braun is known to have been disciplined about what she consumed, except for Champagne, which she guzzled by the bottle. Besides ensuring Hitler’s affection, Braun’s life was devoted to being seen in stylish gowns and admired for her beautiful face and slender, graceful figure. Little else seemed to matter. Her concentration on life’s luxuries is terrifyingly detailed in Laura Shapiro’s “What She Ate, Six Remarkable Women and the Food that Tells their Stories, to be published by Viking tomorrow, July 25.

For Dorothy Wordsworth, the sister of the famed poet, food was used to manipulate those around her, as well as her own sense of self. Her story, as Laura Shapiro tells it in her book “What She Ate,” is one of a talented spinster's all-consuming hunger for affection, most especially her brother’s, disguised in a quiet martyrdom, eventually transformed into an insatiable appetite, devouring porridge only for its butter. ⠀

In her 1962 book “Sex and the Single Girl,” Helen Gurley Brown pronounced cooking a surefire means to nab a lover. “You must cook well. It will serve you faithfully,” she said in her groundbreaking 1962 book “Sex and the Single Girl.” Cook sumptuously for your lover, but starve yourself to keep sexy slim for him was her mantra, claiming her preferred desert to be a box of sugar-free diet Jell-O with a dollop of Dannon light. Her tumultuous relationship to food, her contradictory responses to meals reveal a woman promoting sexuality, but denying herself access to one of the most sensual joys of life. Read more about Brown’s conflicting ideas of indulgence and other notable women’s revealinng relationships to food in Laura Shapiro’s “What She Ate,” out on July 25.

#TBT Taken in April, 1984 when Vanity Fair considered modern dance worthy enough to photograph. The magazine even issued limos to pick up the artists, and provided them with a wonderful lunch, concluding with birthday cake for the American Dance Festival’s 50th anniversary, which Duane Michals’ photo (above) was commissioned to commemorate. Pictured are L-R: Martha Clarke on floor, Marleen Pennison, Robby Barnett, Paul Taylor (unseen is the gum behind his ear); Charles Reinhart, Erick Hawkins, Laura Dean, Charles Moulton, Hanya Holm, Alwin Nikolais.

Note: The only one eating the cake is Charles Reinhart, the Festival’s long-time director. The others in the 1984 Hiro rehearsal photo of “Rite of Spring” taken for The New York Times were two Graham greats--Terese Capucilli as the Chosen One and George White, Jr. as the Shaman. “Rite” received its New York premiere during the Graham Company’s 1984 season at the New York State Theater. #marthagraham #queen #icon #hiro #teresecapucilli #georgewhitejr #riteofspring #photography

Central Park was full of spring Sunday morning. Chess bounded hither and beyond, sniffing flowers, grass, sticks and the butts of every dog within reach. The pond near the 59th Street and Fifth Avenue glistened in the 8am sun. After Chess splashed a bit and raced through the grass, he slipped off of a small stone wall into another part of the water. Then he started to cry at the top of his lungs. Only his head was in view. I panicked, jumped in the water, which was up to my waist. I could barely move. My feet were stuck in the mud and I realized all four of his feet were stuck. I yanked him up and carried his 60 pound body to the edge of the pond, where he could climb onto land. He watched me trying to pull myself out of the mud , and started barking, clearly annoyed that I was taking so damn long. In the meantime, I had lost his leash, and both my body and iphone were soaked from the thick, black water. I walked home, covered with mud from the waist down, sticks and pieces of grass stuck to my jacket, pants and sneakers. Not a single person looked at us strangely.
