Record Time: New & Notable Vinyl Releases (February 2022)

"...the trio’s innate chemistry, built from regular jam sessions during their music school days, keeps drawing them together and they seem to pour so much of themselves into Gypsum. The sensation the full-length creates with Jewell and Anna Arboles’ intertwining African-inspired guitar work and the thick cloudy atmosphere courtesy of the band and engineer Marik Rains — combined with their allusive, heart-on-sleeve lyrics — is akin to the euphoria after a long, deep cry or post-marathon high." - Paste Magazine

WE ARE SCIENTISTS PRESUME WE'RE ALL OKAY AT ZEBULON IN LA — Get Some Magazine

"It's been a long while since We Are Scientists had been in town bringing their mix of danceable-indie-rock-meets-post-punk, and opening song 'You've Lost Your Sh*t' from their 2021 album Huffy addressed the elephant in the room. When singer/guitarist Keith Murray belts out 'Let's presume we're all okay here...' in the pre-chorus, it couldn't be a more fitting sentiment for the last two concert-less years. As soon as the song fully kicks in the entire room started dancing, waving their hands in the air. Launching non-stop next into 'Inaction' off of their first official release 2006’s With Love and Squalor, and then 'Buckle' from 2016’s Helter Seltzer the entire night was a rollercoaster of We Are Scientists' nearly 20 year stretch of recorded music." - Get Some Magazine

We Are Scientists recently graced the stage at a Frogtown favorite neighborhood venue, Zebulon Cafe Concert, in Los Angeles.

I Don't Wanna Wait | An Interview With Keith Murray of We Are Scientists - Ghettoblaster Magazine

"The band’s latest effort Huffy (out now via Masterswan Records), embraces listeners with the duo seemingly looking forward and uncovering a seemingly fresh outlook. Integrating an angular post-punk element to their work, in the beginning, We Are Scientists have now pushed their focus on augmenting ‘80s synth-pop and indie rock within their repertoire. Album opener 'You’ve Lost Your Sh*t' is a bouncing, punk gem with uncontrolled guitars and percussion. Garage rock vibes captivate 'I Cut My Own Hair' along another stellar track, 'Fault Lines.'" - GhettoBlaster chats with the band about their new album, check in below!

You can prep all you want, but there is a level of anxiety when you step into the world of college campus living. The environment you were once so confident in knowing every inch has now turned uncertainty. People you have been around from birth to now seemingly have disappeared without a sign or tr...

Roberta Flack Recalls Inspiration for 'The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face' on 50th Anniversary

"Through the years, I've sung that song thousands of times, and it has taken on different stories in my life, [but] honestly, at the time it was recorded, I sang it about my cat who had just died... I loved that cat so much. That's the story I was telling in the recording."

- Roberta Flack on her timeless 1972 classic "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" to People

Although the singer-songwriter's biggest hit has been a wedding staple since 1972, her goosebump-inducing vocal performance was inspired not by romantic yearning but by the death of her cat.

Interview: William Ryan Key’s New EP Is a Breath of Fresh Air

"All the songs in Everything Except Desire are complex and emotional, and they show a new side of William Ryan Key. 'The Swim Back' is a completely instrumental song that feels very relaxing, and it introduces the EP perfectly. On the other hand, 'Heavens' is a dancey track, though its lyrics can get somewhat dark. The closing song, 'Union Chapel,' is a rather visual tune, and it is definitely a great closer for the EP." - Soundigest

Soundigest talked to William Ryan Key about his latest work, the experimental EP Everything Except Desire.

We at Reybee are gutted to hear about the passing of Mark Lanegan who we have worked with for the last two years. The music world lost a unique and brilliant visionary and we lost a friend. Our shared condolences are with his friends and family and all who loved him and his music.

Godspeed, Mark. Godspeed.

Song Premiere: "Fellini" by Sandman Sleeps

"For those whose Italian might be a little rusty, La Dolce Vita translates to “This sweet life.” Sandman Sleeps' gregarious, full-throated embrace of their rebirth as a band in 2019 is aptly summed up by the phrase." - Big Takeover Magazine

The Florida indie-rock band’s vocalist/guitarist spoke with us about their imminently approaching, independently released debut, Crisis Actor. Cristina Peck also shed light on the LP’s second single, which premieres exclusively on the Big Takeover today.

9 out of 10! "A hazily exciting first album, there’s some minor grunge stabs present, too, which only adds even more intrigue to the trio’s unpredictable and inviting formula. A striking first album, at this rate it won’t be long until Gypsum are everyone’s favorite band. - Take Effect Reviews on Gypsum's self-titled debut album!

Gypsum Sonic Ritual, 2021 9/10 Listen to Gypsum A Los Angeles outfit with an affinity for post-rock moments, the trio of Gypsum make quite an impression on this debut album, where Sapphire Jewell (guitar, vocals), Anna Arboles (guitar, vocals) and Jessy Reed (drums) cultivate some very intere

We Are Scientists Livestream

"Huffy songs included opening with the album’s own opener, 'You’ve Lost Your Sh*t,' as well as 'Sentimental Education' and killer singles 'Contact High' & 'I Cut My Own Hair,' plus the Cain-sung 'Bought Myself a Grave' (which even live does include the extended distortion breakdown afterwards). For it being Huffy’s tour, the record didn’t dominate the setlist like usual first-tour-of-new-album tours, perhaps due to the band’s long time away from touring pushing them to widen their scope (they’ve also got a boatload of great albums & songs to pick from)." - QRO Magazine

Nathan Gray & The Iron Roses released the album Rebel Songs shortly before Christmas, and are shortly to hit the road with their new Melodic Punk music. It's an album that promises to make waves through its distinctive two-part mission, firstly to bring a joyful development out of the suffering and anger that has become even more a part of our collective lives in very recent times, and secondly to create a diverse and inclusive environment for music fans who attend the band's live events supporting the album and beyond....Reybee, Inc.
New Jersey-based Alternative band The Wrens released their third album, The Meadowlands to very favorable reviews in 2005, but a fourth, much-anticipated studio album never arrived. Now, with Kevin Whelan as songwriter and other former Wrens members, Greg Whelan, and Jerry MacDonald performing, the album Observatory has been released by Sub Pop Records under the moniker Aeon Station. The new album brings together several songs that have had a longer history of development with The Wrens and several brand-new pieces that complete a fascinating musical and thematic arc on the subject of change....Reybee, Inc.

Jammerzine has an exclusive interview with Lizzie Edwards, front-woman of the mega talented Lizzie & The Makers. Having just released their new album titled ‘Dear Onda Wahl’, produced by Grammy winner Mario J McNulty (David Bowie, Prince) and Cure guitarist Reeves Gabrels (Tin Machine, Bowie), Lizzie & The Makers have poised themselves on becoming, what I would consider, an ‘arena act’. Just listen to ‘Dear Onda Wahl’. In today’s interview, we talk about the writing and recording process of the album as well as that original style that Lizzie & The Makers instinctively have plus collaborating with such external talent and what the future holds. Jammerzine has an exclusive interview with Mitch C. Mitchell and Pat Via from BMG artists January Jane. I’ll start this off with a simple truth. These are the types of artists I love to interview. Not only are they living their dream as major label artists. They made it happen on their own terms. And not only that, they seem to be a tight knit family that deserves to be where they are. Mitch and Pat are totally cool. Fame has not phased them whatsoever. I get the feeling they have the same friends and dreams they had when they first started out. Those aren’t always the types of artists who make it big, but they are almost always the ones that stay big. They are the ones their fans love not only for the music but for their character. And that's where ‘love’ turns into ‘in love’. Reybee, Inc.
Jammerzine has an exclusive interview with the musically juxtaposed juggernauts known as We Are Scientists. We talk with Keith Murray, one of the two scientists. And everyone knows that one out of two scientists recommend good music and the other scientist would add that if you don’t listen to the first one it’s because you’re a d*ck. Having said that, we get a chance to get inside the mind of a musical mastermind and delve into the world of creative songwriting and the creative process therein, near future plans and possible touring (hmm?) as well as ‘Huffy‘, the new album by We Are Scientists, releasing today!
