What is hell like? American and Filipino soldiers who ended up as prisoners of war following the Japanese invasion of the Philippines thought they were living in it. In an excerpt from Fire and Fortitude: The US Army in the Pacific War, 1941-1943, historian John C. McManus describes a harrowing existence for which none of them were prepared. Lightning Joe Collins was a general who led from the front, never hesitating the pick up a rifle like any other soldier and take the fight to the enemy. He personally taught troops in combat how to take out machine gunners and snipers, placing himself in great danger. After proving his bravery in the Pacific, he was transferred to Europe for D-Day. War in the Pacific was more than sun and sweat—for one battle, it was frost and frozen feet. The soldiers of the 7th Infantry Division landed in frigid Alaska and fought the only cold-weather battle in the war against Japan. In new book, military historian takes ‘boldly revisionist’ look at World War II in the Pacific

Dr. John C. McManus, a military historian whose most recent books have dealt with the U.S. Army’s experience during World War II in Europe, now sets his sights on the Army’s role in the Pacific theater of World War II in a new book, the first of a two-volume history of the struggle. The soldier-statesman who restored peace in Europe

“A deeply researched and masterfully written work... that should establish Marshall at the top of any list of American titans.”—The Washington Times on David Roll's GEORGE MARSHALL, out Tuesday, July 9! http://bit.ly/2Ir0nlg

In 1938, during one of his first meetings with President Franklin Roosevelt, Gen. George Marshall listened to plans to counter Hitler’s military build-up by amassing an air force of 10,000 planes immediately, followed by 20,000 annually.

John C. Mcmanus

General Jonathan Mayhew Wainwright IV. Grandson of a naval officer killed in the Civil War. Nephew of a naval officer killed by pirates in 1870. Son of a West Point trained cavalryman who died in the Philippines. Jonathan graduated from West Point in 1906 as first captain of the corps of cadets and served over four decades in the Army. A subordinate once described him as "a lion of a man." Wainwright had the terrible misfortunate of commanding the doomed Filipino-American forces in the Philippines in the spring of 1942. He spent over three nightmarish years in Japanese captivity, enduring starvation, beatings and degradation. "The skin of our buttocks just hung down the backs of our skeletonized legs like deep pockets," he once wrote of the experience. "There was nothing in our minds except food." Wainwright was the highest ranking American POW in World War II. He is a major "character" in my forthcoming book Fire and Fortitude: The US Army in the Pacific War, 1941-1943. Only a little over a month until the July 30 release date!

Why D-Day Still Matters | The Saturday Evening Post

“Desperate. Hellish. Disastrous. Catastrophic. Traumatic. Shocking. Bloody. Anyone who was at Omaha Beach on June 6, 1944 … is likely to have used one or more of those powerful words to describe it. At Omaha Beach, the stakes were so high, and the fighting so bitter, that the very name involves something legendary, even iconic.”--John C. McManus, THE DEAD AND THOSE ABOUT TO DIE
