silversalt pr silversalt = a crystalline chemical that creates images when exposed to light Thessa Mooij launched New York-based Silversalt PR in 2007. Her way with words translated into award-winning publicity campaigns with real results.

Silversalt PR made sure A-list talent (Spike Lee, Michelle Yeoh, Berenice Béjo, Michael Imperioli) expanded their global reach, while introducing new filmmakers to the world in Cannes, Berlin, Venice and Sundance. Silversalt PR helped fresh talent establish careers in a century-old entertainment industry that was struggling for sustainability. Innovative technology started evolving the landscape. Ever committed to discovery, Thessa aligned with Breaker in 2017, the first start-up to bring blockchain to the entertainment industry. Likewise, music non-profits The House of Songs and the Dutch Gospel Arts Institute empower artists by sparking fresh notes and paving new roads.

This is why I get up every morning to do what I do. What better goal then to help create roadmap for the next generation and celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month? Super group The Texicana Mamas (my long-time favorite Tish Hinojosa, Patricia Vonne Fan Page and Stephanie Urbina Jones) wrote their second single "Abundancia" in the Austin The House of Songs and talked about the power of music with Latinitas magazine.

#latinxheritagemonth #latinx #HispanicHeritageMonth2020 #texas #austin #sanantonio #music #newmusic #thehouseofsongs

Looking for a new Latina group that empowers AND gets your body moving? LOOK NO FURTHER 💥

What the The Texicana Mamas aim to convey with their DIY music videos is a celebration of family, friendship and culture —which have the power to connect people even during an isolating pandemic. They want their fans to enjoy the simple things in life, whether it be preparing a meal with loved ones as shown in “Cocina de Amor,” or virtually spending time with your girlfriends like in “Amigas de Corazón.”

The Mamas tell emotional stories that express their bi-cultural experiences while instilling a strong sense of self and fervent pride in their heritage.

The group said it was important for them to talk about immigration and border issues, because the Latinx community needs more voices.

Although there have been obstacles, the band has made quite an impact together in just two years. They’ve performed all over Texas, including Latinapalooza at South by Southwest and in popular music hubs like Nashville, New York and Washington. What’s more, their debut album features Grammy Award winning Flaco Jimenez and Max Baca of Los Texmaniacs, both of whom have shared the stage with them in the past💪🏽

#MondayPicks Our strategic consultant Thessa Mooij of silversalt pr recommends French drama Le Bureau Des Légendes . Thessa says:
"French drama series about the country’s spy agency led by the incomparable Mattieu Kassovitz (director of the seminal French hip hop-fuelled drama La Haine) who plays an undercover agent slipping in and out of ISIS and Putin’s hands. Spellbinding for its authenticity and prophetic foreshadowing of today’s world crises, Le Bureau is based on real accounts by former spies."

You wouldn't think so, but rock and roll was born on the Arkansas gospel circuit! Sister Rosetta Tharpe was a bad-ass on guitar and more. Here's my Monday Pick for The House of Songs.

#gospel #arkansas #rockandroll #sisterrosettatharpe #gibsonsg #shoutit

Every Monday, The House of Songs team picks books, movies, tv shows and activities that are getting us through lockdown. Today's pick comes from our Strategic Consultant Thessa Mooij of silversalt pr:

Born in Cotton Plant, Arkansas (1915) Sister Rosetta Tharpe tore through the Pentacostal gospel circuit like a tornado with a guitar strapped to its back. Building on the church’s ecstatic beats and her own divine talent as a guitar player, she paved the way for the rockabilly frenzy of ELVIS PRESLEY and Little Richard.

Thessa recommends reading Shout, Sister, Shout!: The Untold Story of Rock-and-Roll Trailblazer Sister Rosetta Tharpe, by Gail Wald.

The New York Times' Laura Sinagra says, "Absent the personal recollections of Tharpe, who died in 1973 at the age of 58, the book relies on intimates and musical heavyweights, from her singing partner Marie Knight to the gospel singer Willa Ward-Royster of the Ward Singers to Isaac Hayes. Count Basie's trumpeter Harry "Sweets" Edison recounts her scorching performance for “From Spirituals to Swing,” a groundbreaking 1938 concert at Carnegie Hall. And of Tharpe’s guitar prowess, Jeannette Eason, the wife of the steel guitarist Willie Eason, offers the assessment, “Rosetta got her man in her hand,” an elucidation that beats any cultural-studies jargon outright.

It's not every day that a young filmmaker gets to be on the cover of Cineaste, but Christopher Everett who co-founded BLK Docs and is crowdfunding Wilmington on Fire's sequel gets a shout-out in the new August issue's editorial about Black Lives Matter documentaries.

"It’s also heartening that community initiatives have entered the fray and sponsored Web screen- ings and Zoom Q&A sessions that can serve as springboards for activism. BLK Docs, for example, a joint project spearheaded by The Luminal Theater and North Carolina’s Speller Street Films, is focused on building “an authentic docu- mentary film culture within the African American community” with the aid of “film screenings, online classes, and webinars.”

Black lives you need to see: Christopher Everett cofounded BLK Docs dedicated to #Black #documentarians. This monthly online series kicks off Thurs June 25 with his film Wilmington on Fire about the 1889 massacre of a thriving Black community. Q+A Alert: BLK Docs Q&A: Christopher Everett; moderated by Erika Alexander

As producers, programmers, and archivists of Black cinema, Christopher and The Luminal Theater founder Curtis Caesar John started BLK Docs after being increasingly frustrated by being unable to find enough contemporary documentaries by Black filmmakers to showcase.

“Of course there are “I Am Not Your Negro,” “Whose Streets?” and others, but for the most part Black-subject documentaries, especially those highlighted by big festivals, are made by non-Black directors,” says John. “While those directors are usually well meaning, by putting the focus on Black documentarians directly, BLK Docs will literally show that we are the most keen interpreters of our own stories and create a system in which they can thrive.”

Building on a global communications career in Amsterdam, London and New York, Thessa Mooij launched silversalt pr in 2007. That’s right, lower case. It’s all about putting the client in the spotlight while remaining in the background.

Thessa cares deeply about creators and the world they live in--whether it’s A-listers such as Spike Lee and Michelle Yeoh, or launching brand new talent with high visibility and awardss (Cannes, Berlin, Sundance).

Ever committed to discovery, Thessa aligned with Breaker, the first start-up to bring transparency to the entertainment industry using blockchain technology in 2017.

While the world is rapidly evolving with innovation, the global lockdown requires us to reimagine our future in film, music and far beyond. silversalt pr thrives on strategizing to help music non-profits The House of Songs and the Dutch Gospel Arts Institute give artists a bigger voice--especially now that the live music industry is on pause.
