Standing near the center branches, Jackie snapped to attention with her beak slightly open and her body tense as she peered into the darkness surrounding the towering pines. Below her, Sandy and Luna remained tucked close together, still wrapped in sleep, their growing feathers fluffed against the chilly mountain air. Moonlight shimmered across the surface of the lake while the forest beyond faded into deep shadows.

Then, almost hidden against the tree trunk on the right side of the nest, a small squirrel could be seen clinging motionless to the bark. Frozen in place, it seemed just as aware as Jackie that it had ventured a little too close to the wrong family.
