A Journey through NYC Religions

A Journey through NYC Religions Join us as we travel down all 6,374.9 miles of NYC's streets, every alleyway and quite a few hallways to map & photograph every religious site.
We are an incubator and educator for new ways of doing religion reporting and understanding the postsecular city. We are nonsectarian and nonpartisan and open to anyone’s cool and authoritative reporting on NYC religion.

We are exploring the postsecular city. Join us as we travel down all 6,374.9 miles of our city's streets, every alleyway and quite a few hallways to map and photograph every religious site and to interview clergy and lay leaders at the sites.

Mission: We are a public square for the postsecular city. People of faith, people of no faith, liberals, conservatives--all are welcomed to journey together to make this city better for all people. Our warmest feelings are toward those who help the poor, the needy, and the abused.

The Best Thing You Can Do for Your Work Is Take a Walk

Dorothy Day was a lifelong walker, and it was on her strolls along the beach in Staten Island in the 1920s that she first began to feel a strong sense of God in her life and the first flickerings of the awakening that would put her on a path toward sainthood. It’s probably not a coincidence that Jesus himself was a walker — a traveler — who knew the pleasures and the divineness of putting one foot in front of the other. Indeed, it’s no coincidence that many of the greatest expressions of faith and devotion involve pilgrimages to holy sites around the globe.

The Rev. Huang Lei, the leader of an underground church in Wuhan, said local officials have rejected their donations because they fear trouble with more senior officials for cooperating with what the government in Beijing considers to be illegal organizations.

In temples, mosques and churches, China’s believers have been eager to fight the virus. Not all their efforts have been well received.

The Korean American Christians of Flushing, Queens

Every morning around 5:30 to 6:00 am, Korean Americans start arriving at their churches, fast food restaurants, and circles of car service drivers for a bit of Scripture reading, prayer, and exhortation to live godly for the day. The intensity of such practice of faith indicates to its participants that they are “real” serious about religion, that they are “real Christians.”

The evangelical revival in Flushing was started by the Korean Americans. It started early in the morning.

The £99 bracelet, which is activated by making the sign of the cross with it, is aimed at tracking a devotee’s progress through a range of prayers and is accessed using an app called Click to Pray. It even doubles as a fitness monitor, tracking the wearer’s steps, location and calories burnt.

With the doors, along with security guards and surveillance cameras, the school bills itself as the “safest” in America. It has about 50 bulletproof doors. Every classroom and administrative office in the building has one, as do the gym and cafeteria.

After the Valentine’s Day shootings at Marjory Stoneman Douglas H.S. in Parkland, Fla., left 18 people dead and provided another grim reminder that school shootings are no longer rare, Msgr.
