Just sign, madamโฆ it's for your son's safety.
"Not until I see him," I replied firmly, my voice shaking but my heart standing strong.
Because I refused, they drove me straight to the police station. The journey felt longer than it really was. My mind was racing, my chest heavy with fear. I didn't even know what I was about to face.
As soon as I stepped down from the jeep, my eyes searched everywhere. Then suddenly, I saw him.
"My sonโฆ"
It was his eighteenth birthday.
He rushed toward me and held me tightly like he would never let go.
"Mama, where have you been?" he cried.
"It's a long story," I said, my voice breaking.
Then he started sobbing. For the first time in my life, I saw my son cry like that. My heart shattered instantly.
"What is it, my son? Why are you crying? What happened? Did you do something wrong?"
"They came to school," he said between tears. "They spoke to the school authorities and then asked me to follow them to the station. When I refused, they forced me to come."
"Why? What is your crime?" I asked, confused and scared.
"I didn't do anything, Mama. I swear."
"If you didn't do anything, then why are you here?" I pressed, my voice now filled with worry.
"I don't knowโฆ they said we will find out. They asked me who my mother was, and I told them your name and where to find you. They called that man over there and told him you no longer worked there. So I told them to call my aunt too."
"So she showed them where I liveโฆ" I muttered quietly.
Something was not adding up.
I gathered courage and walked up to the man in charge, the complainant.
"What has my son done wrong?" I asked respectfully. "Please, can you explain, sir?"
The man said nothing at first. He just stood there, calm and composed. His expensive clothes, his perfume, the way he carried himself; everything about him showed power. Even the police inspector addressed him with respect.
"Sir," the inspector called softly to the man.
"Please sir," I continued, "what crime has my son committed?"
He finally looked at me.
"Are you his mother?" he asked.
"Yes, sir."
"Is that why you refused to sign the document?"
"Yes, sir. I need to understand first."
He nodded slowly.
"The crime your son has committed," he said, "is that he is refusing to accept that he did something wrong."
My heart skipped.
"What do you mean, sir?" I asked.
"Do you see that other young man?" he pointed.
"Yes, sir."
"He looks like the person I have been searching forโฆ yet at the same time, he is not."
"I don't understand, sir."
"I think I need to explain clearly," he said.
Then he turned to my son.
"Do you recognize me now?" he asked.
"No, sir," my son replied.
"Do you know what you did?"
"No, sir. I don't."
The man sighed.
"You look exactly like the boy I am talking about," he said slowly. "But you keep insisting you don't know me. Meanwhile, the other boy there seems to recognize me, even though he doesn't remember everything clearly."
He was referring to the other young man arrested with my son.
My heart started pounding.
"Did they commit the same offence?" I asked quickly.
"No," the man replied.
"Then who is responsible?" I asked, my voice trembling.
"One of them is guilty," he said calmly, "and that one will face the consequences."
"Who, sir?" I asked.
"The one who, by the end of this case, still refuses to recognize me."
At that moment, fear gripped me completely. I could feel it deep in my bones; my son was in serious trouble.
But suddenly, the man turned and looked straight at meโฆ then smiled.
"I think it's time I reveal who I am," he said. "It will make everything easier for all of us."
My heart stopped.
What was about to happen next?
