“Daphne Oram is a legend, she was a vanguard, it is an honour to win an award in her name. I've worked in the intersection of sound and fine art for some time...The Oram Awards is the perfect space for this kind of practice, as Oram defied expectations around what music could be and defined electroacoustic music, spiritually and physically.”
Vivienne Griffin lives and works in London, frequently moving between Berlin and the West of Ireland. They are an anti-disciplinary artist using sculpture, sound, drawing and writing in various forms including sound poetry, spoken word, extended vocals, videos and augmented reality.
They regularly change media, materials, and form within their practice. In audio works they engage with the primal act of vocalising sound, fragmented language, spoken word and synthesised vocals. As an Irish person who cannot speak their mother tongue, they use broken English as a defiant act. Words become forms to walk around, sound becomes a sculptural material. The physicality of language and the physics of sound have been a continuous source for audio works, drawings, and sculptures.
Griffin studied fine art at City University New York supported by a Fulbright Scholarship.
Recent shows include the Manchester International Festival 2021, AGM at Somerset House Studios, Montez Press Radio and Bureau Inc in NYC.
With this support from the Oram Awards, Vivienne is working on a new spoken word piece: fragmented language and a mix of broken English and as Gaeilg using a patch synthesiser. On the other side of the technological spectrum, they are working on a video game that is also a music interface. The aim is to show this a playable game with a large sound system, so you feel the sound as much as you hear it when you play the game.

“What does a museum that centers Care, Repair, Play, Justice, and The Future look and feel like?"
🗣 This was the question at the heart of our first Year of Uncertainty Intensive, which took place at the Queens Museum on September 26 and 27, 2021. Conceived as a moment of deepened conversation, co-creation, and collective re-imagining, this YoU Intensive brought together our Artists-In-Residence, Community Partners, Co-Thinkers, and Program Partners. Participants formed small breakout groups to delve into the five core YoU themes and then shared the outputs of their collaborative ideation with the rest of the YoU Cohort.
Some memorable highlights from this first YoU Intensive included a sun gazing and mythopoetic movement workshop with interdisciplinary artist Koyo, a walking tour of Flushing Meadows-Corona Park with Guardians of Flushing Bay, a healing justice circle with Malikah, crochet and embroidery with Bordeando, and recorded chats with Montez Press Radio.
🍽 We also gathered around delicious meals prepared by Lahi/Kuya’s Lechon, Makina Cafe, and Arepaliciousny.
🎧 With the incredible support of Language Justice co-op Caracol Language Coop., we were able to hold space for hybrid, cross-language (Spanish-English) engagement!
👏 A big thank you to our YoU Cohort members for joining us during these two days. What a thrilling and inspiring way to mark the launch of “Phase I: Participate and Build”, the first phase of our public-facing YoU initiatives, now on view at the Museum.
