[Essay] Vicious Cycles, by Greg Jackson | Harper's Magazine

"But the more pernicious effect is "a psychic cancer" introduced into the culture as a whole. The extreme coincidence of urgency and irrelevance, terror and impotence, turns into a maddening unsettledness and contradiction in the conceptual sphere of life, authoring fear, anger, and confusion everywhere. The essential experience of a hyperreality is angst: dread, hushed panic, ambient foreboding. A disturbing fiction at least comforts you that it is fiction. A needling friend may finally admit, “I’m just f**king with you.” The news is, on balance, just f**king with us, but it can never say so because it draws its stimulating power from the pretense that it isn’t entertainment, isn’t just “fun,” but is deeply consequential. It rigorously blurs the line between entertainment and public service, since its market share and prestige depend on this confusion." Greg Jackson

I would share a video like this in a sociology course to stimulate interest. Sociology is a science as such we see truths a relative to a particular group and point of time. People find the science "deep and amusing" like good sex when infatuated. The fact is sociology sees both the big picture (Macro) the small pictures (micro). Enjoy the video (propagated by a group that makes light of real-life changes on the macro level.

Thank you so much for liking the Post. I have been practicing Sociology for over three decades now. Sociology is the one discipline that studies "current events" from a scientific point of view. Given "the matrix" we live in - follow the site on a regular for a mixed bag of news with an objective point of view, media and feelings when appropriate. Thanks again!

Well socialization requires tools of education, indoctrination and information. We are officially wearing masks, keeping curfews, reporting our travel on a govt. Form, comfortable standing on lines to test for covid-19, census takers knocking on doors, police in place.....I can go on and on ..... we have been officially resocialized and we know because we have added these activities to our normal daily behavior.

A Cancerous Affair

"what happens when social work and community passion mix a compelling brew of theory and cultural mores? a cancerous affair. this novelette and working research thesis combined with human characters and clinical jargon substantiates the love and confusion that materializes when institutional policies impose their form on the ethos of a community. The text is an academic tool for students of social work and infotainment for the curious to grassroots community work and street corner pharmaceutical constructs."

" Today, major corporations and leading institutions of entertainment, sports, finance, the press, and academia seem to have discovered for the first time not only how wrong they have been, but also how blind, stubborn, and insensitive. When will Wall Street and the sacred stock market question their role in this? Any serious conversation about systemic racism would have to start there too—maybe even primarily so. And artificial fixes will not do. A complete turnabout is required; a total reframing of rules and practices must take place, and substantial allocation of resources must come with it. The sociologist Kenneth T. Andrews wrote in 2017 about the need to “capitalize on the energy and urgency of the moment … and look to build a movement that generates new sources of cultural, disruptive and organizational power.”

the entire source of this article is biased but this direct quote is right on.
